Is it possible to remove the intake manifold with the CIS on top of it?
 

I'd like to check the condition of the wires below the intake mani and it looks like it might be doable to remove it in one piece with the CIS. I remember a thread where this was discussed but I could not find it anymore.

So who has done it with the engine still in the car and any tips on how to do it?

When I just did this, I had the motor dropped. I am doing a full top end and re-ring leaving the block in the car. I doubt you will have enough clearance to lift the entire inlet/CIS assembly over the long studs without dropping the motor at least a few inches.

I'm sure it's possible, but it would probably take more time and effort than it's worth. When I stripped down a motor for a top end and re-ring I removed the CIS first. It was just easiest.

That's what I think too, lower a few cm's is a good idea

The CIS is mounted to the intake maifold with three 13mm nuts on these rubber buffered 8mm studs Pelican Parts - Product Information: 999-703-263-00-M260

They're probably 32 years old and kinda dried out by now and they're not easy to find if you find one with the rubber part seperated from the stud. Good idea to replace them while it's off.

They're good for mounting oil coolers and stuff like that too.

It's alot easier to remove the CIS before removing the intake manifold in or out of the car.
