Newbie with a Project
Hello 930 Guys and Gals:
I am new to the 930 list. I have a couple of older NA Porsches. I bought an 85 930 a few years ago that was a project. The trans needed rebuilding and the engine leaked oil badly. Life intervened and the project has set for three years. I have tried to accumulate parts as I could. I rebuilt the trans (new synchros, operating sleeves and dog teeth). I am now putting the engine back together. I used 965 P&C, had the heads ported to match the Carrera manifold and twin plugged. I also had the cams reground to 964 specs. I am converting to EFI using the SDS system (with help from Jim2). I have a bunch of questions about the engine and car. The start of the questions: One of the items that I accumulated was a set of 18" wheels. They are 18X9 and 18X10. The rears fit fine, but the fronts have too much backspacing (6.5 inches-the rim hits the shock). The fellow that I bought them from claimed they were for a 930. Were there different front offsets for variations of the 930? I bought this turbo from another Pelican. NEW Garrett Ballbearing P-Trim turbine . How should I cool the turbo? Oil? Water? Silly Putty? Thanks for your help, Tom

Tom. Welcome to the sickness. Yes there were differing offsets and hubs based upon whether the cars are equipped with floating front rotors or not. The later hubs (non-floating rotors) incorporate a 21mm spacer into the rotor. If you have the early hubs you may luck out and just need a spacer to gain the clearance you need...

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between the early and late hubs? Thanks,
Tom

Tom, late 930 (~1980+) non-floating hubs have the dust cap recessed so it is flush with the hub. Early floating rotor hubs (prior to 1980) are the same as 911 hubs with the dust cap exposed.
edit: don't worry about cooling the turbo. It will function just the same as any turbo without the cooling passage. Last edited by Jim2; 01-04-2012 at 04:37 PM.. |

The early rotors bolt to a hat. It's a 2 piece rotor.

this may help:
930 front rotor difference? (pic) "MY78-80 used a 2(really 3)piece design. w/ a separate 21mm wheel spacer on normal 911 hubs, if the 21mm spacer is discarded this setup also works on a normal 911. When the spacer is in place the setup needs 930 front fenders. MY80-89 used a 1 piece rotor w/ a special 930 hub. The late 930 hub incorporates the 21mm spacer and cannot be used on a normal 911 front. The 1 piece rotor is also o/s but the rotor o/s cancels the hub o/s(-21mm) so that the rotor annulus sits in the same place as the older design as required by the caliper/strut assembly which is the same for both designs" quoting Bill Verburg - the resident Pelican authority on Brakes

Thanks for the info about the front brakes and hubs. It looks as if I will need some sort of spacer to run the wheels. I do not know what the PO was smoking when he said they would fit a 930 (maybe he left out the part about the spacers
![]() Jim2, thanks for the GREAT template for drilling the holes for the Hall-effect pick-up on the 930 engine case. It is a great tool nad virtually idiot-proof (Even I managed to get the holes in the right place). If anyone else needs the template, I would be glad to pass it along to them. You guys are a great source of information. Tom
