New to the 930

1988 930 ......

How do I adjust rich lean....

I need it to run leaner to pass emissions...this is one possible fix I have been told and I am willing to give it a shot.

Chris

Welcome to the forum, you will get your answer here, but I might suggest adding some more info on the car and adding a pic of it.

What do you have (if any) for mods to the car?

When was the last service done to the vehicle?

More info will get you better results.

Nice colour. Easy to keep clean. I like your front bumper. Looks good with the lettering. Hope you have a AFR guage before you start tweeking. cheers Philip

Doherty,

Welcome aboard to the Turbo forum. Adjusting the CIS mixture should be no different than what you would do with your '74 911 - assuming it's CIS and not mechanical injection (I spied your garage...nice looking 911). Just follow the link that "the Oily One" provided. You should be able to reach over the top and toward the back of the intercooler with enough room to insert the 3mm allen. Do remember to make very miniscule adjustments; i.e., a couple degrees rotation at a time. It would be helpful if you know someone with the equipment to test CO% out the tail pipe (Gunson Gastester's work ok for this). Idealy, you would have an on-board AFR gauge though.

Yes, it's a must! Of course I'm just saying that since I just installed one in my car after 4 years of ownership.

The same?

I dont know what an AFR gauge, so it is safe to say that I dont have one.

Would it be to much to ask if some one could take the diagram from that link and draw an arrow to exactly where the wrench would go.

The adjustment we did on the CIS was on the plate and a long one in between the plate and distributor...The 74 was different than the upgraded ones...as I so recently found out....(unobtainium part!!).

I know how to make small adjustments and the guy at the testing station is going to help somewhat as well with the readings.

Nice looking car.....You have some nice upgrades! My 88 is still bone stock except for the radio. She is sluggish down low but I love her warts and all....Next month will be my 1st anniversary...Enjoy the ride!

Nice Ride...welcome to the Dark Side!
You might ask some local hot rodders if they know anybody with a hookup on inspections....that is much easier route...shouldn;'t cost more than $100-150...not that I've ever done that.

There ya go....couldn't be simpler.
Doherty, of course you gotta take off the air cleaner "mailbox" to get to the adjustment (and while you're in there, install - glue in - a permanent allen wrench which will sit high enough for adjustments without having to remove the air box). Push down against the spring tension until you feel contact with the arm inside the fuel head, then turn it. Push too far/hard with too much contact and you'll move the metering arm and go instantly rich. You'll get the feel of it.

AFR=air-to-fuel ratio gauge. Reads off a wide band oxygen sensor in the exhaust. Gives you a ratio of the mixture (14.7:1 being optimum for mpg, but not necessarily optimum for performance with our cars). Or as I already mentioned, find someone with a "sniffer" to check CO% out of the tail pipe. 3% is rich. I suspect for emissions testing a person would want to see .5-1.0 % CO, but that's just a wild ass guess.

I can adjust the idle AFR screw without removing the air box. Its necessary to have an Allen wrench with the correct proportions, and you can play with the adjustment without removing anything from the engine compartment (at least on my '79).

Ditto on Jacob's remarks. I cut down a standard L shaped allen wrench so it fit to adjust the turbo engine in my SC, which has less head room than the 930.
Neet looking car, welcome!

I don't think your car (1988) requires a tailpipe test (just saftey inspection) . . . mine is a 1987 and last year (2011) was the first year for the saftey inspection only (Dallas County) . . . I think the emissions law reads "25 years old or older no emissions test" - that would mean that in 2011 my car was just 24 years old, but the test station I went to is legit and the car was entered into the test computer etc . . . I first noticed this strange math when my brother's 1986 951 was only required to get the safety check the year prior (in 2010) . . .

Funny side note about the saftey check - the law reads that all original emissons components must be in place for the visual inspection - all mine is removed - when I took it to a test station last August the tech attempted to pop the front hood to "look at the engine"! His buddies in the garage laughed their asses off when I pointed out that the engine was in the back! I did not think that anyone in the world, especially a "car guy", did not know that the 911 engines were in the rear! Needless to say, he did not know anything about the car as far as what the original fuel/exhaust/emissions gear looked like!

which on board AFR meter do most people use? I see the host has several whcih are also data logers, but i would expect there are others that are less expensive w/o the data logging capability.

OK, I found the adjustment. But it goes up and down freely...and I am able to turn it with out the 3MM wrench...

Do I have to push it down to engage it or just turn it CW for a lean?.....

EDIT!!....DAH...If i would just go back a couple of post, I will find the clear instructions.....I got it, I will get it adjusted.

Thanks again.
