i Flippin give up....rear torsion bar help...pleeeease

ok, 1980 930, car was corner balanced and lowered about 6 years ago, so i am assuming the torsion bars were removed at this point? i am converting the car to coilovers so i need to get these out,... the rear spring plates, came right off, no problems at all, bushings are GONE...nothing left...no worries i have spent the last 3 hours fighting with ONE torsion bar, both of the torsion bars are loose and wiggle back and forth quite a bit... actually really loose, just wont pull out sprayed with oil, let sit, NOTHING i have 10 minutes away from welding a chain to it and putting my car in reverse...my luck, my 930 will be draggin down the street with me...torsion bar intact... any help is greatly appreciated i have rear some threads, and all see to have great ideas if one car is already out...

Jim, I had the opposite problem. My torsion bars were stuck in the outer bushing. When I tried to pull the spring plates off, the bars came out with them. I ended up drilling a pilot hole in the bushing cap to break it apart. Are you planning on selling the torsion bars? If not, can you get to them with a big pair of channel locks? Since mine came off the oppsite way, I am not sure how far they are in. But once you get one out, you can use a long piece of rod and punch the other side out.

From under the car drill at the center of the torsion tube a 3/16 hole and tap for a grease fitting. Install the grease fitting and use the thickest weight lube you can get the heavier the better. Then pump the fitting with your grease gun and it will simple hydraulically push either one of the bars out once one is out re-insert the loose torsion bar and make a simple plate that bolts to the torsion cap to prevent the free torsion bar from coming back out and continue pumping the lube to the fitting and this should push the remaining one out. After that losen up the make shift plate and remove the first torsion bar.

Well, have you tried heating the tube and then yanking? Or you could drill the middle of the tube for a zirk if you could find where the gap between the bars is, then pump in grease for a hydraulic removal.

The issue I see with it is finding where the two bars end. The splines are continuous and so you can't be sure that the middle area is not covered by torsion bar splines.

No big deal since he isn't going to worry about the bars just keep drilling til it atleast it is into the tip of either bar and when he pumps the lube it will make one or the other move even it it is dead ending into the bar. The lube will find its way to the cavity between the two and make them come apart.

I think a torch and rope is easier than tapping a bunch of holes in a thick steel tube. Or some sort of gear puller mechanism.

I had a he!! of a time getting the spring plates to let go of the TB's. so i was expecting a fight to get the TB's out of the tube. Not so.... just kept wiggling up- down to and fro and pulled them both by hand. If all else fails the grease fitting idea should work.

Curious, can you get a bearing puller in there?

update.... i had a buddy heat the **** out of the torsion tube on the drivers side while i tied a rope around the bar and a comealong bolted to the side of my garage, and POP! took a lot of pressure... the drivers side bar looks great, no rust, greasy as all hell, not sure why so difficult to get the Fout these are red in color. is that factory? or are these aftermarket? i dont see any markings on the bars... i will try and work back on the passengers tomorrow, that is the one that is giving me the most trouble

Great. Mine are red as well. I think they are stamped at the end.

Now that you have one bar out, the other is easy. Take a long rod and stick it in the driver's side hole. If it's long enough, it will contact the passenger bar from the back side, yet hang out of the driver's side hole. Now tap it out.
