Custom electicals- setup question

Guys,
This seems to be the best place to ask. The 911 section isn't nearly as technical as what I see here.

When I see cars with modded engines and electronics mounted in the interior vs the engine compartment I always note that the CDIs are mounted on the inside of the firewall. I understand this from the standpoint of keeping wiring runs as short as possible..but?

Why not mount them further forward where they are easier to access for PMS and troubleshooting? AND this keeps them further from the heat? Anyone?

Also, while I am at it.. I have a long hood 911 race car. It came with TP with all the coils mounted on the engine side on the fire wall. This seems to be common. I sometimes see them mounted on top of the engine also. I have been surprised that I haven't seen these mounted inside also? Any comments/thoughts/whatever?

JR
