Which Core Engine to Choose To Turbocharge

for a lightweight trackday car.

I'm building a very lightweight (1750lbs) track car with a mid-mounted engine and am thinking of going the turbocharged route as an alternative to a mildly tuned 3.6ltr NA.

I'm not after big BHP but a reliable engine that is quite responsive, reasonably free revving, with minimal lag and around 400BHP.

As its not for any particular production race class I completely free to base the build on any core engine, combination of parts and engine size that would be best.

At the moment I have very few answers and no pre-defined direction so any advice would be welcome.

What about a stock 993tt engine.
That would fit your needs.
Reliable.
Minimal lag
400hp.

Mildly tuned 3.6L NA won't get you anywhere near 400hp so your decision may already be made.

As much as I like air-cooled Turbo your best option is water-cooled Turbo from a 996 or 997.

Yes, but with the 993 you dont have the drama of Radiators.
Anyone know what is the weight difference 993v996/7 engine with all the bits.
That may be a good starting point.

964, 3.6L block, 400 BHP with 3.8L NA is achievable then lends itself to beefier build later..

how are you thinking of adding more beef?

Small block and water cooled Porsche are out for me as I would like the engine to be in keeping with an air cooled aged car

Yes, a 964 3.6 motor running a low 0.5bar boost will put out a reliable ~400BHP. Contact Protomotive for the kit.
