79 930 turbo transmission mounts
Got a question on replacing stock OEM tranny mounts on 79 930 turbo on the 4 speed box.
---------Can I replace these with semi solid or sport type mounts? I already installed WEVO engine mounts and like them. Fred

WEVO can supply this as well. I got my transmission support beam yesterday from them on an exchange basis, but you can also just by their kit and modify your existing mount with their new bushings if you prefer

I replaced mine with the blue Wevo's, great quality. You have to do a little cutting and welding to replace the old ones. I really like them and the installation is not a big deal. Go to the Wevo site and there are pictures and instructions so you can get an idea of what is required. ![]() Hope things are well with you Bud !!!!!!! Cole

I did the same as Cole with Wevo also. They have instructions and measurements included as to where to cut your existing mount cups. You remove a bit of material and weld them in place - they provide the welding instructions/diagrams also. A bit of work in the shed, but it is not too hard.

OK, just took some. Rainy day outside, so bit restricted what I can take in with camera.

What a great space, and well equipped I see, I'm jealous as hell. My cubby hole of a garage, where the sled is, is about 20 x 10. But once the car is done it will be fine for storing the old girl it does have AC and heat. What a beautiful young lady. I love those little girls I had 3 children, all girls, and I have 5 granddaughters. Love the 930 and it's even the right color. The attitude award must mean the lovely young lady takes after her Grandpa. Cole

We didn't expect to be parents again, and it has stuffed a few plans. But she is a fabulous kid and it is revealing to see the world thru the eyes of a child.
But she is coming to the conclusion that grandads cars are always broken. She also enjoys sitting in the car and going up/downup/down....on the hoist. The hoist makes a huge difference to my cranky old knees and sore backs. Regards Alan edit - PS you could always bring your car over here to work on in the shed!! There are times I wish I was over there giving you a hand.

I cannot wait to see your sled when its done. I take my hat off to you for converting that thing into a 934, that was a huge project. I just got done with my local region this past weekend getting trained for my national instructor license with PCA at Summit Point raceway. I am pretty proud to have gotten the license, all the more difficult because I had never seen that track before. My mentors were both very good guys and helped me out alot. Now all I need is to get some track tires so I can get my car to turn and stop at the end of the straightaways. Getting back to the original post, I noticed some movement on the track in the shift rod and shifting was a little more difficult than usual. I figured it might be from displacement in the original rubber tranny mounts, since i already changed to WEVO engine mounts 2 years ago. The tranny mounts were in great shape when I had the engine out for rebuild last winter though, so they didn't appear to be bad, but I figure stiffening these up might help with the shifting issue. That's awesome, a Nationally Certified Instructor, congratulations and enjoy. I know how much you enjoy the track work and it doesn't get any better than this. HAVE TONS OF FUN !!!!!! Thanks for the Sled encouragement, coming from you it means a lot to me. I'm still waiting for the IC to get back so I'm sending my CIS and new BL WUR out to Larry Fletcher. He is going to go through it to make sure everything is up to snuff and dial it in with the new WUR. It should be ready to plug and play when I get it back. I think you would like the Wevo Trans Mounts they are really a big improvement over the factory cushions. Another thing you might consider is drilling out the mounting hole and putting timeserts in. I did that to mine and it really helped as the old threads were badly worn. I have the timesert kit and would be glad to send it to you if you would like to do it. Cole

yes, sorry about the hijack Fred, Cole & I got a bit carried away. And congrats on your Licese. Onwards and upwards.
The other thing about your set up currently is you have a stiff end at your motor and a soft end at the tranny. That puts a certain amount of strain thru the casings. All the flex is coming from your trans end. By changing the trans mounts to same as rear, the stress will be relieved, possibly inside the cockpit too. Alan

Thanks guys. I just wish I could weld.
I hate tracking down someone locally that would be willing to do little jobs like this for me and also do it properly. Otherwise I would have replaced these mounts like I did on my 79 911SC since they were identical to and bolted in like the engine mounts on the tranny crossbrace. Of course the turbo tranny support has to be different....dammit. Its funny how much movement I see inside the cab when on the track and really throwing the car around. I think its a combination of centrifical force on the long shift lever and the tranny moving on its mounts.....even with the short shift kit installed and new shifter bushings its nothing like a modern car with short precise throws. I get comments all the time from other instructors doing a ride along how slow the car is to shift. Good luck Cole with the CIS and tuning it when its all together. I know now to invest in Tire Rack stock since you are probably gonna have a standing tab over there when you start driving that thing.....ha,ha. Fred

I wound up stripping/crossthreading the threads in my 911SC up inside the chassis during one of many engine drops....seems like rust and dirt get up in there and it dont take much to bugger up the threads. Arlo's Implement Repair and Crematorium is just down the road from me. I'd be glad to get the welding done and send it back to you if that would help. Cheapest place around and he does great work, also, if you have any recently deceased pets you can send them along and I'll put the urn in the same return box. If you look at cleaning up the hole threads be sure you use a thread chaser and not a tap. A tap will remove metal and make the hole sloppy. Nothing worse than a sloppy hole. I've seen some awesome work by some of the pro's on this board, and if you posted pics/queries I am sure we would have you up and running. I have a vague feeling there may be a welding thread on this board somewhere. But we could start one, and with a welder and a bunch of scrap steel bits and a day in the shed, some expert input from the pro's, I bet you would be away. After that, like everything, it is just practise. And like all tools in your shed, once you got it you wonder how you did without it. And of course you find more and more use for it. (my wife once told my grand daughter that grandad has a welder, ask HIM for some proper fairy wings that will work, rather than the inert flappy things on your back) There would be a debate as to whether to start with mig or arc welding gear - but arc does very well - we managed without mig for 50 yrs or so, and would be cheapest to start with I think. I ended up with both eventually, but still use my modest store bought arc machine on heaps of jobs. Alan
