87 930 just died

87 930 just died like the key was turned off. Checked wires for spark, and there is no spark. Where to start looking for the problem???

Agree w fp relay and the cdi box, which is the most likely suspect.

OK both fuel pumps are running, does this rule out the relay?

Ive got to research the cdi box. Any info for a head start?

Also had a Tach issue. Occasionally would have the tach zero out and not work at all for several minutes a few days ago. Is this related, and point in a clearer direction?

From what I have read here a tach gone nuts is a sign of bad voltage regulator. Located behind alternator in an '87.

If the pumps are running the relays are good. I would move to the cd box next. Engine compartment left side. Turn on the key and listen in the engine compartment for a high pitch whine or whistle. If no sound check power to the box, if power the cd box is bad. They can be rebuilt or you can swap to MSD or something else.

Cd box. Have your local shop swap it quick to test or get it home.

I'm going to have to disconnect the fuel pumps to hear anything in the engine compartment. Where is the relay for them? Where does the tach pick up its signal? I don't think its the voltage reg, no problem with charging.

Mine did the same thing when I first bought it. When the voltage regulator fails it overcharges and fries the cd box. Lorenfb on this forum helped me out with testing and replacement of the cd box. Replaced the alternator with a bosch rebuilt from pelican. No problems since.

Ground issue, battery, voltage regulator, or alternator. BTW, new alternators come with the regulator within. Two birds one stone.

Ok fuel pump relays are good.
I can hear the CD box hi pitch whine, does this rule it out, or need testing?
I also hear a very low intermitten sound on the driver side of the engine compartment that sounds like a rotorary phone.
Any ideas?

Try a different coil.

If it has a silver color bosch upside down on the fan housing thats a junk Brazilian made bosch coil and you only rent those.. for a little while.

Then through engine vibration, repeated heat cycles, third world assembly work, and being mounted upside down they eventually leak out of the some internal cooling oil the wire windings are submerged in and burn out.

The only reliable new coil you can buy for bosch or permatune CDI these days is the permatune epoxy filled coil. It's the right impedence, made alot better with no oil inside, and black like the origonal German made bosch coil.

mstriss, are you in GA, I just went thru diagnosing and fixing a no start issue due to no spark. Someone from GA sent me a PM to call them to help them out and i can't find their phone number. i would work backwards from the plugs to the CDI to isolate where the issue is.

CDI could still be bad even if it is whining.

Might want to check everything listed in the no start thread, your tach dropping off though could indicate the green wire of death might be a problem. easies way to tell that is to unplug the CDI box have somone turn the engine over while checking with a meter in the plug terminals. this could either indicate a bad wire or burned out igniter coil in the distributor.

no spark to plugs? start with the Coil, then CD box. I had same problem and it was a bad CDI.
