changing spark plugs
Changing plugs in a 930 is like learning a new language, You will learn the 4 letter words first and quickly !! LOL
Anybody have an easier way for the drivers side plugs The Porsche spark plug tool works pretty good, still very challenging to work in such a confined area, maybe someone has a better idea ? |
Without dropping/lowering the engine, the OEM spark plug tool is the way to go.

Cyl #1 is a nightmare if you haven't done it a few times. Many times I have changed plugs for others only to find #1 had apparently not been changed during recent tune-ups.
What I use is a 3/8 ratchet, 3" extention, spring wrapped wobble joint, and spark plug socket. To get to #1 I remove the 930 BOV. If you have a 965 BOV this is cake. |
I went to Sears and bought one of their spark plug sockets.
I tape the extender to the socket, and seat that on the plug before engaging the ratchet. Four letter words a little blood etc - sure, but not too bad. |
i remove the two back motor mount bolts and lower the engine a fe inches then do it from the bottom. easy and doesnt take long.
|
I simply use a spark plug socket that has a built in universal joint on it, then a 6" extension and a 3/8" ratchet handle, works out ok. I do not remove anything except the intercooler, up pipe & fuse panel cover.
Albeit, sometimes you do bleed a tad bit in the process. Mark |
Nothing in here about a magic wand? I am not looking forward to the three driver's side plugs at all!
|
Possible to still do this on a car with the smog pump, etc still intact without lowering the engine?

Hymn I usually struggle with this sort of thing but the plugs were cake for me. I have a pivoting ratchet and a wobble extension that seemed to be the perfect length. The hardest part for me was the plug socket got stuck on the plug a few times
|
Removed intercooler and the 965 BOV. 1/2" ratchet and an extension with a deep socket. Curse the 800lb gorilla that put the plugs in last time. Curse louder. Plugs came lose. Change over to a 3/8" drive with a real sparkplug socket that holds the plug snuggly.
The rest was pretty easy. |
its always the driver side! and when you have 12 i gotta remove the wastegate too damn #1
|
I hate to rub it in but on my turbocharged Carrera 3.2, I don't remove anything to change plugs and it's not bad at all. About 30 minutes to do them all.
No AC or heat though. :) |

i recently welded it all together since the socket would sometimes come off when piutting plugs back in unless i put the plug on the edge of the socket. i dont know what your configuration is but when i did a leak down test, i loosened the turbo inlet tube at the turbo so i could move it just enough to make it easier to get to #1. very dumb question, i do hope you are taking the IC off. i changed plugs on a friends older toyota min van. the engine is under the car and lays on its side. very neat, low center of gravity. but to get on e of the plugs out. you have to drop one end of the motor down. it is OOOH so close to coming out, but just not quite. |
