Buying advice for 930

Some have the bar of whatever they want set so high to get that exact car, all original paint, certain color or options, etc, with only a few left that way of the few that were built, they wait to long. My advice has always been get a good one and if the exact one comes your way sell it and pay the difference then. You will pay less that way as your car will have followed the market appreciation and still be able to own a decent ride. In a up market you want to get one ASAP. In the past many that could have bought that "not exactly what I want", but is now a desireable and valuable car, ended up with nothing. Don't believe me ?, just go to any auction, car show and you'll hear many sad stories. Forget that ideal used car buying advice, a 930 isn't that anymore. At some value point restored vs original vs some restoration becomes almost a moot point.

Tony,

to me, just as in vintage Ferrari shopping, you buy the best car you can find or afford regardless of color. for me color is a secondary concern.

oh, I should add that in the higher end vintage car market (930's are entering that category) I personally prefer a documented restored car to an original. that's just me.

^^^ Same here Pete, and in fact, I would not pay more for a car based on its color and find it hard to believe that some people do. That said, some colors I definitely do not like on a a 911, such as yellows and maroons, so I probably wouldn't even buy ones in those colors (unless I planned to repaint it, buttofcourse).

Five years ago a buyer could be picky, today most of the good ones have a home. There are still some available but the cost to purchase eliminates a lot of potential buyers.

In today's market, I'd be dreaming of being an owner, that's as close as I would get.
I'm glad I purchased mine when I did, I got what I wanted and for the foreseeable future it has a home.

Exactly the same for me!

I bought mine around 8 years ago for about $35K; that number was absolutely "break the bank" for me, and in fact, I financed about 1/2 of the purchase price (paid the balance off in just over one year, however). Today, I could only dream of buying one at current prices - totally out of my financial league.

Right on Tony, Time is definitely not on the side of the buyer in this market.
I guess I should feel lucky, I am pretty color blind and have never been concerned about the color of cars I buy.

Well I'm very picky about int. & ext. color so very glad I got my blk-on-blk when I did 7 years ago for an unbelievably low under 25K with 31K on the clock.
That ain't happening any more!!!!!

Mark, black on black is probably my favorite color combination on any car, and definitely the 911 Turbo. I have white on black, which I like (never liked white on a car before, but saw a white Turbo in person years ago and thought "Oh shat, that works"!), but only because I could not find a black one to suit me at the time.

Now if only I could convince you to get some proper wheels!

PS: I really like guards red, too, but don't want Paul to know (ha ha ha)!

What ever floats one's boat..but I say that if I'm shopping, color and options would be very important. Unless it's for investment purposes..then again that would be a shame as these cars need road time. Would I pay extra for the right color...absolutely!

Totally agree, I'd pass on a ppi too. By the time you book the ppi, someone else just bought your car.
Sold my blue 930 for enough to buy another 997 turbo and then some.
These have become vintage collector cars, no longer hobby cars to be tuned, driven and enjoyed I'm afraid.

Except by some of the people that already own them, right? I, for one, still tune, drive and enjoy mine and the rise in value hasn't changed that one bit for me. In fact, I would tune it quite a bit more if I could afford to do so (really itching for a 600hp build, etc).

Who is the car for? Is it for you or for your survivors? If it's for you do what you want to it,enjoy it and have some fun driving it. If you want to leave it for the ones once your gone then leave it alone and let them reap the rewards. I vote to have fun with it! F#ck it I ain't taking it with me!

Ronnie, Ronnie, Ronnie, you just have to get over this adolescent fascination with "hot wheels" model car, type wheels.

Yes, they "look right" on the 930 when in 1980's era photos, and on investment garage queens, but for a driver they are so wrong in both size and width.

Yes, I know you can get custom/aftermarket BIG Fuchs, but alas there is no getting around that Fuchs are just so dated looking and so....{dare I say} ...fuch'n ugly.

Yes, you all can start flaming me right about........ now.

^Ronknees is so FLAMING himself he's not got the time nor energy left to flame you, Mark^

Wow, you like GUARDS Ronnie?

(good fookin thing I've got Indishrot then!!!)

phew.

Almost cause for sale.

Chris, I hear what you're saying about these being vintage collector cars... but to me... it's still just a car. And I drive cars. And I REALLY drive THIS car. That's what it was built for, I don't care how much it's "worth".

And I don't care if it's dirty. Hell, the neighborhood gearhead dads were in my garage last night for bierz and we were christening the 930 with random splashes of said bier ala holy water technique, just "because"... and mostly in spite of such MENTALity (sorry brutha).

Was kinda funny. Had to be there. I of course got my Bugs Bunny on with "I dub you, Sir Loin of Beef".

I even broke my golden rule and relented to the peer pressure and did a midnight fire-up (certain my non-gearhead neighbors looooooooove me) just to hear the awesomess and basssssssssk in the splendor or 10.2:1 93 octane @ idle.

I nevvvvvvver ever ever ever start the fukker w/o ensuring a full warm up drive and WOT run before parking. Ever.

But last night the bier won - felt damn good too... hadn't turned that gdamn key since 1/1/15... WINTAR SUUUUUUX!!!

anywho - my buyer's guide? Buy one 2yrs ago. Whoops.

And Ronnie, yeah I'm right there with you - I'd be way down the slipperiest slope had my tax bracket be better aligned with my habits. Sigh. Especially hard to run with all the superheros here certainly... crykie!

Well whattaya know, I'm not alone. Fuchs look okay (I guess) with certain, lighter colors but they're way down the list of the best looking wheels for these cars.

IMHO of course ...
