kokeln IC, rubber elbow...
...anyone here with a kokeln IC and its rubber elbow installed ever experience it collapsing under moderate boost - somewhere around 4500-5000 rpm???its a new phenomenon for me...initially thought it was my seals and/or o-rings so i replaced them with solving the problem...what happens is, under boost, the car will feels as if it was popped into neutral, with no power at all...about 10 seconds of coasting, i can somewhat conservatively get back on it...i pulled off the road immediately after the sputter and noticed the rubber elbow was collapsed...any ideas would be helpful...im new to the turbo world, but my 930 is driving like a 911 - which is only bad when its a 930!!!
...im about to bend a 3" tube as a sort of endo skeleton so it holds form, but feel as though that is not looking at the big picture...thanks... 1986 930 AaRoN |

I think you're talking about the rubber intake elbow going to the CIS air flow meter. Never seen one collapse and that makes you wonder if the airflow meter is being held back from opening by the fuel head control plunger.
If the rubber elbow has had oil mist in it for a while then the rubber on the bottom side may soften and rot and then the hose is shot. If thats the case new origonal C2 type rubber elbow hoses with the molded in blow off valve boss in it the Kokeln uses were around $25 from some dealers a couple years ago. |

...the integrity of the elbow doesn't seem compromised at all...i guess i need to familiarize myself with the air intake process and mechanism - and take it all apart...thanks, east coasters, for your feedback...any more will be welcomed, for sure...

If that ebow is collapsing then it seems that would be from either a really clogged air filter or the fuel head control plunger is not moving upwards because of gummy deposits around it or control pressure on top of the plunger is so high the air flow meter can't push it up against it and the elbow hose is collapsing under intake vacuum.
just guessing and never heard of that happening. |

...well i can rule out the air filter as it was just replaced...i picked up a cd copy of the 930 repair/maintenance manual on ebay for 20 bucks and have been looking at the plunger...do you think its a matter of the meter (im assuming thats what you mean by plunger) being too low or too high???
the elbow is definitely caving in under moderate boost...another feel i am getting is a less than smooth acceleration - like you'd get with a bad fuel pump or fuel filter...already spotted a bummed out distributor cap, so im thinking i couldn't possibly get a suspect filter in the same shipment...the porsche fuel filters do say "made in W. germany" though...ahhh the eighties!!! |

More than likely, the elbow is collapsing because it is past its service life . . . it would probably be smart for you to replace the elbow first, and see if a new one takes care of your problem, before messing with the metering assembly or worrying about other possible causes.

i've seen this happen as the rubber ages and looses it's "life". Just replace it.

Porsche makes and sells it. It is commonly called a C2 type rubber intake hose used on the 964 turbo but may have a different name if you can ever find it in a catalog.
From my experience it's the kind of part that you have to ask for verbally over the phone and describe it till they know what you're talking about. The 964 turbo also used CIS injection but with a bigger long neck intercooler and smaller faster reacting recirculation type blow off valve made of plastic that fit in a boss in this hose that was origonal equipment on that car. Nowadays there are many better quality aluminum C2 type blow off valves with 1" or 25mm hose connections available that fit that hose. Ebay them. 1.5 years ago I bought one for my Kokeln intercooler for 25 bucks from a Porsche dealer in Oregon plus $6 usps priority mail shipping and had it in Florida in 2 days. Pelican doesn't stock it and would have had to order one from Germany for over $42 plus higher cost shipping and a long wait. The part number is 930-110-382-00 Google Sunset Porsche in Oregon for contact, you won't find a lower price on it. Last edited by JFairman; 12-03-2012 at 06:40 AM.. |
