G50/50 how much to pay for?
Hello,
I can get a G50/50 with low mileage from a buddy. What would be a correct price for both of us? Or, how much have you payed for your G50/50 gearbox? Falk

I paid $7,500 for a freshly rebuilt G50/50 that had:
- a shortened bell-housing - a slightly Spec Clutch & pressure plate - slightly used 930 flywheel Have seen a few that have been cheaper and others that were more expensive. Good luck - Richard.

Hi Falk, Lucky you.
Was looking for one, but ended up with a G50/00 from Germany, since I could not find a G50/50 Now I am collecting parts for the upgrade. Just ordered the new pressure plate from KEP

I paid 13.2 for mine with all Motorsport gears and synchros as well as a Guard differential, pedal box etc. 7.5 is a stellar deal.

What those of us in the business would call a core, but many in the private party used market would call "good used" usually trades hands these days for $5-6k. To refresh such a box is generally another $2-3k. To "remanufacture" or customize it is thousands more.
Figure gears are $1000-1200 each. One of my Lsds is around $3k. Shortening is usually around a $1000 process. I have sold many a $15k 50/50 over the years. What is the mileage on the gearbox in question? Have you been able to drive it while in a car? The one big thing to keep in mind is that if you have to go into it the old in for a penny in for a pound adage comes into play. If it, for example, has a scratchy 3rd gear synchro, the labor to address that $200 part is the same as if you were doing every synchro. Once you start opening up the gearbox you will spend a minimum of $1000. So make sure you are 100% comfortable with the condition of the gearbox on the front end. I have seen too many friendships hurt or destroyed over the years by an engine or gearbox deal gone bad. |

Matt,
Thanks for detailed info! The mileage is 30K km, 20k miles. I wasn't able to drive it, it is out of the car already. Further, I really do not need it urgent, my 87 930 has a G50/00 swap already. I would buy it just to have a spare. It is a G50/50-2, should have a LSD if I remember correct? Maybe I have used the term "buddy" wrong. Its not a friend, just someone I know from the Porsche hobby. A nice guy, but a friend is something different here. Falk

The LSD would add $1000 to my above ballpark.
G50's are so bulletproof, unless you are making something like 750whp I don't really know that there is a need for a spare gearbox. Plus, I personally prefer the gearing of the G50-01. G50-50 gears aren't any stronger than the NA gears, just taller. The big upgrade between a 50-50 and an 50-01 is the ring and pinion. The 50-50 was the first gearbox to get the 9" ring gear.

Thank-you for the info Matt, really informative.
What is the top speed you could achieve with a G50/01 vs G50/50 ? Is adding LSD to a G50 really necessary, Is it that much better in a 911? Last edited by B+B; 02-05-2013 at 09:21 AM.. |

Going to give a plug for one of my dealers, who is a great resource of gear charts. They list all the stock stuff on their website with downloadable PDFs:
California Motorsports Porsche G50 5 speed transmission section Short answer is G50-01 is 170mph, G50-50 is 200. That is with 25" tire and 7000rpm. I prefer the shorter gears for quicker acceleration. Most 911s did not come with an LSD from the factory because the rear engine design gives them pretty damn good traction right out of the box. The LSD comes into it's own if you are doing hard launches and need the off the line traction or are taking the car to the track. But for everyday usage it is more of a nice luxury than a requirement.
