Is it possible to get off with the motor still in?

It is easier on the 930. I did it but I don't have much in the way ie airbox, emission devices etc. I think you can. If not, a partial drop is possable.

Benny you can do it with the motor in place, you'll have to remove the intercooler, air cleaner housing, and possibly, the air metering unit/fuel lines, but not the intake manifold like pictured below. Clean around the thermostat very well so none of the grime can fall into the opening after you pull it out.
I think you'll need to remove the oil press light sender and banjo bolt so you can get the turbo oil feed line out of the way so you can pull the T-stat up.
