I was on the coast this week camping with the RV,, ran into a guy with a Targa SC,, started talking to him.. Say's it's an ORIGINAL 83 turbo SC ?? yup narrow body with a 3.3 turbo in it.. Said his brother bought it new in 83
I checked it out, it was brought in through Canada..

I don't believe that is correct.

Sales in the US of the 930 were baned between 1980-1985 because of the inherent "widow making characteristics of the turbo.

At that time, the US market for Porsche was almost 50% of it's market share.
For every 20 911's sold, roughly only 1 turbo was sold.

In other words, the numbers don't jive. I believe in 1983, there were 65 930's sold in Canada, but no such animal as an narrow body factory turbo-targa(and the targa was never as a good seller as the coupe either) 911SC.

What most likely happened is this individual did exactly what I did with my 1983 911SC. I bought a 3.3L factory engine with all ancillaries, and then had a shop go from one end of the car to the other(at enormous cost) to bring the car to an "acceptable" level to handle the almost doubling in power.

Maybe someone can clarify this, or find us somewhere an example of another 1983 911SC turbo-targa 3.3L factory delivered as such.

One sure way is to take the VIN, call the local Porsche dealer to run that, and he'll tell you about it's validity. My bet is it doesn't exist as claimed.

The factory chose not to import the turbo to the US after losing the law suit, citing emissions compliance. There was no ban.

Does seem unlikely.

Although I seem to recall someone (Frere? Starkey?) writing that the factory built a narrow-bodied turbo car for one of the family as a birthday present, and that one or two were produced via Special Wishes - just like Special Wishes apparently built a few SC slants.

Seriously doubt it.

I have never heard of such a thing

But, I have been more certain before, and been wrong.
