Make your own rubber (not that kind!)

Guys,

I have been working on the 911 and I needed some custom rubber grommets and I found this product. After looking at, I thought about making rubber grommets on the 930 intercooler mounts. I have not used it yet, but plan to order it to give it a try. Also, I have no financial interest in the company; just thought the product could prove useful in the garage.

The product is Versimold and I hope the link works.

From the video it looks like it would be worth a try at the very least.

Me too! I thought it was some sort of miniature baking show. Rolling the dough, making cookie molds.

If it is what it seems in the video, that's pretty cool. Plastics and rubber products are pretty darn amazing sometimes.

Take care,

Very cool product, can anyone comment on the durability of the result in our environments (heat, pressure, weathering etc). I know there are a few places I would like to put some sort of rubber seal where durability is also quite important.

Any insight woudl be great!

Dennis,

Since I started this thread, I feel responsible to answer the best I can. Again, I have not used it the product yet, so I can only show what I found on their website. I know it doesn't answer your specific questions, but maybe give you better insight to what it can do.

THE MOST VERSATILE RUBBER PRODUCT EVER CREATED !!!

VERSIMOLD is a silicone rubber based material that is specially formulated to allow the user to form it into any shape with simple, common every day hand tools and “cure” it into a high performance, resilient, tough rubber object, part, or gasket.

GASKETS – The VERSIMOLD product can be rolled or flattened into the desired thickness, then either cured and cut or punched into a tough gasket – OR – the VERSIMOLD material can actually be pressed onto the gasket surface, instantly transferring the impression of the surface into the material, taking the guesswork out of hole location.!
GROMETS – The VERSIMOLD material can easily be formed into just the right size grommet by simply forming it into the desired shape, then pushing a plastic or metal tube of the desired hole diameter through the center, then use a coin or flat object to press a slot in the outside, then cure into an instant grommet.
RUBBER FEET – The VERSIMOLD material can be formed onto any common metal hardware such as machine screws or bolts, then cured into instant appliance feet, vibration dampeners, or mounts.!
ELECTRICAL INSULATORS – The VERSIMOLD material has a dielectric strength of over 400 volts / mil of thickness. The material can be formed into a high voltage insulator, then cured.
BUMPERS AND MOUNTS – The VERSIMOLD material is perfect for fabricating bumpers and rubber mounts, everything from door stops and hood bumpers to small engine mounts.
REPAIRS – The VERSIMOLD material can be “added” to items to effect a repair such as; rollers, mounts, covers, bumpers, other rubber items, etc. – so long as the item can be heated to cure the VERSIMOLD without damaging the original item.
HOBBY – VERSIMOLD can be formed into parts that were originally custom made and are no longer available with basic model making skills.!
INDUSTRIAL – VERSIMOLD’s virtually unlimited industrial repair uses make it a must for any maintenance man’s toolbox. !
AUTOMOTIVE AND MARINE – Literally thousands of repairs can be performed using VERSIMOLD. It is ideal for creating rubber parts for collector cars that have not been remade.
HOMEOWNERS – VERSIMOLD can be used for door stops, tool handles, weather seals, plumbing repairs, it can even be formed into a bungee cord or battery strap. !
VERSIMOLD APPLICATIONS

GASKETS, GROMMETS, PLUGS, SEALS, INSULATORS, APPLIANCE OR FURNITURE FEET, BUMPERS, STOPPERS, COVERS, TREADS, BUNGEE, BATTERY STRAP, COVER FOR SHARP TOOLS, HINGE, RETAINER, NON SLIP PAD, AUTOMOTIVE RUBBER PARTS, TRAILER LIGHT HOLDERS, BUSHINGS, KNOBS, ELECTRICAL INSULATION, ELECTRIC FENCE ISOLATORS, WATERPROOFING, MOLDING, PAINT MASKING, THREAD PROTECTION, RUBBER HAMMER, TOOL HANDLES, SPORTING EQUIPMENT, SEPARATORS, FISHING POLE OR POOL CUE ENDS, WASHERS, GUARDS, MOUNTS, CONTAINER LIDS, TENSIONERS, SMALL DRIVE BELTS, LADDER TREADS, HARDWARE COVERS, GUIDES, INSERTS, SPLICES, ANTIQUE AUTO OR TRACTOR PARTS, KEY COVERS, ORGANIZERS, HANDLES, MODEL PARTS, GRIPS, CORNER PROTECTORS, LURES, BANDS, RV REPAIR, CABLE ROUTING, CHOCKS, FASTENER, IMPRESSION TRANSFER, DUST COVERS, SCHOOL PROJECTS, BASES FOR FIGURINES, CORROSION PROTECTION, HOLE REPAIR, CORD GRIPS, STAIN RELEIFS, VACUUM CLEANER REPAIR, CLAMP FEET, FORMED SANDING BLOCKS, HANGERS, AUTOMOTIVE MOLDING, PEDAL COVERS, BICYCYCLE OR ATV GRIPS, MAKE AN IMPRESSION ON HARDWARE OR HOLE TO DETERMINE SIZE, ARTS AND CRAFTS, CABLE OR HOSE BOOTS, DAMAGED AREA FILLER, OUTDOOR LIGHT FIXTURES, POOL EQUIPMENT, LAWN FURNITURE, PLUNGERS, VALVE SEATS, AIR NOZZLES, DECORATIVE ITEMS, REPAIR GUARDS, STOP RATTLES OR SQUEAKS, SPRINGS, AND THOUSANDS OF OTHER USES !!! LIMITED ONLY BY YOUR IMAGINATION !!!

INSTRUCTIONS:

Remove the specialized rubber material form the package and remove the needed quantity. Return the unused quantity to the container. Cut off portions made during the forming of the gasket or other item can also be returned to the container for later use.!
Form the material into the desired thickness by using a rolling pin or similar on a flat surface.
TIP: The formed sheet of material can now be used to make an impression on the part that the gasket is intended for, making it easy to outline bolt holes or cutouts .!!!
TIP: Items can be formed onto a “core” such as sheet metal or other items to from the necessary shape or profile, then “cured” and removed from the core.
Make the necessary forms and cuts into the material to make the gasket or item. (remember, unused material can be returned to the container)
Now that the gasket or item is formed, place the material on a metal flat surface for curing (think cookie sheet !)
Using an industrial heat gun set to mid range, an oven set on 250 deg F, or an electric hair dryer, “cure” the gasket until it is shiny and firm. DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME !!!!!
Allow the gasket to cool until cool to the touch.
Peal the gasket or molded item away from the cookie sheet, and Presto !!! You made a part with VERSIMOLD. !!!

Thanks, I have to try some....I have one project in particular where Porsche never made a cap that this could well be ideal for.

Seems almost too good to be true, but then again, there are some amazing materials out there that do amazing stuff...

I will post what I end up doing,

Dennis

I found something similar recently called Sugru. Similar idea but cures at room temperature over night and looks like it sets harder.

Bought a pack because the product looks cool, but haven't used it for anything yet. Just played around with it, it feels like modeling clay, and sets to a hard resilient feeling rubber. No idea how resilient/durable it actually is.

Very cool though

We are the manufacturer of Versimold, very easy to use and can be molded for anything from gaskets, o-rings and bumpers, etc. Cures by applying a heat gun. We also manufacture ER Tape, which is a silicone rubber tape, stretches and bonds to itself instantly. Both were featured on Stacey David's Gearz. Any questions, feel free to contact me or visit the website - Performance Products - Rowe Performance Products : Rowe Performance Products. Have included the link to the video from Gearz
