k&n ru5163
hey guys-trying to clean up engine compartment.. Make some more room etc and I saw some posts where people installed the k&n 5163...for what looked like a perfect fit...
ordered and installed one....and the filer is hitting (i havenet figured out what it is or its purpose yet ) but its hitting the screw/post/plunger to the right of the filter ( it has a spring on it ) and acts like a plunger..... the filter is wedged so hard against it-its imossible for it to move at all questions what is the plunger/screw? i suppose it needs to move freely, correct? and for those who have installed the k&n---- how did you work around this? any trimming involved? thanks again ![]() |

That is the idle mixture adjuster (moves the air metering arm down/up slightly) - 3mm alan goes in, push down, turn ccw for lean and cw for rich. People that have installed those air filters cut a notch in the rubber portion.
There is more info, and a drawing of it, in the following thread - adjusting mixture Last edited by Ronnie's.930; 07-24-2013 at 10:18 AM.. |

I have the same filter and using a sharp single edge razor blade I cut a V shaped section out of the rubber following the inner edge of the V in the steel screen mesh pleat. The CO adjustment post fits into the V just fine then.
Also remove the steel ring and rubber gasket seal assembly for the origonal air cleaner so the K&N filter slides down all the way. It fits a lot better that way. I suggest you save the gasket in case you want to put the oem air cleaner housing back on someday. |

One more question on this... The mixture adjustment (plunger) ... Air filter removed---if I push down on the plunger all the way, the metering plate moves down a bit..... But if I press down on the metering plate-the plunger doesn't move.......
When car is running-the plunger - doesn't do anything correct? Im still Leary of how close it is to the air filter-even with the notch I cut in it....if I just make sure that it is all the way up when the filer is installed it should be fine? Thank you all again |

Right - the plunger doesn't do anything unless you push it down (doesn't move when the car is running).

I removed three "wedges" of rubber material so that the "fold" of air filter on either side of the mixture screw could be pushed over to make room. Hope that makes sense. I'd take a pic if I had it with me.
Sounds like you already got it covered but hopefully this will help somebody.
