Adjusting Idle Questions

When adjusting idle / CO on a stock 1983 Turbo (3.3), does one turn off the engine when adjusting the spring loaded mixture screw?

I have read through the factory workshop manual, but it only refers to:



8(b)
Never apply pressure to adjusting wrench while
adjusting (engine stops)
<--Anyone know what that means?

And

9. Remove wrench.

Caution
Never leave wrench in adjusting hole when
accelerating engine as this could severely damage
mixture control unit.


In other words, my question is: Does one make the small adjustment to the mixture screw with the engine running (idling) or with the engine stopped (off). If the adjustment is done with the engine off, how does one accurately adjust CO with a gauge?

A secondary question is that mention is made that one "must plug the adjusting hole before taking CO readings." This car (a Euro model) didn't have a plug in the adjusting hole. Is this a source of a vacuum leak?

The whole reason behind adjusting the idle is complaints of idle surging when the car reaches operating temperature. The car seems to run on the upper side of warm when running (Temp gauge slightly above horizontal when moderately driving, higher when stopped and idling).

You can adjust it when idling but if its rich already it will stall the engine when you press the key. Many pelicanites leave the key while running so its not like it will emidiately go gaboom if you leave the key. I dont. IIRC the hole was on the early turbo 75-77

Thanks.

This one seems to go from surging to black smoke out the tailpipe within 1/8 turn. When black smoke, the exhaust burbles and pops even at idle. I guess it's time to check control pressures..... What's the easiest way to put the fuel gauge on an otherwise stock 930?

Just buy the cis tester kit so you can also measure system pressure. I have mine permanently installed. If you search this forum you will find pics of the fittings needed on install.

Already have a CIS pressure tester. Just never have had it on a 930.
