1977 930 Track car - Need help with value

Hey guys,

I just got a 1977 930 track car. It was converted in 1978 and has been tracked since. It's in ridiculously good shape, very clean, and runs like a bat out of hell! The motor is a 3.3 litre that's not original to the car, with an intercooler.

According to the PO, it qualifies for, and has raced in a couple of vintage events. This 930 started life as (according to the PO. Still haven't ordered a COA) silver on red 930, but was only that way for a year. The engine was put in about two years ago, and has only logged a couple hundred miles.

While showing it to a local, well known shop, the owner of another local well known shop stopped by, looked at the car, and said "hey, I know this car!", so I took the opportunity to ask a few questions. Turns out he was the person that installed the motor that the PO bought for it. According to the PO, it was an interdooled 3.3 from an eighty-something (forgot) 930 with 30K miles. The engine was pulled apart and the shop owner looked it over, replaced the head studs and left it alone, because it was perfect. I'd also like to note that the mechanic that did work on the car for the PO, has done lots of work for him on his other track cars (don't want to go through them all in case the PO doesn't care to have anyone know what he has/has had in case someone recognizes the car, but the list is f'n impressive!), and said he "always goes top-notch".

The car has had the coil over conversion, Plexiglas door windows and rear qtr windows. All window seals look to be brand new. tranny is also brand new. Tires are in great shape, wheels are refinished very nicely, front hood is carbon fiber, It has a full roll cage that from what I'm told, was done very similar to the factory cup cars of it's era. You can eat off the engine. Oh yeah, and did I mention that it's CLEAN!

It's hard for me to list everything the car has as I literally just got it yesterday and am now beginning the long process of going through it to see exactly what it has, but the truth of the matter is that this car is bad-a$$. The owner of the local shop I took it to drove it and told me that he's been doing this for 30+ years, and this is the fastest stock(ish) engined 930 he's ever driven!

Sorry for the long winded story, but I want to let everyone know the quality that has gone into this car before getting opinions as to it's value. I know these things are hard to value since it may be worth a million bucks to one guy, and five bucks to another, but maybe some of you have knowledge of some transactions that may have taken place recently.

Any input would be great!

Great looking car....

How long did the prior owner own this car?

JPLonghood (John Shaefer) sold a car I could swear was the twin to this about four years ago here in S. FL. The cage work is identical(and good). At that time the car had factory 15x9 rear fuchs also.

As to value, there is the number it would take to build it and the number you would get if you sold it which will be no where near the build cost. I have been through that a few times.

Just curious. Again great car.

Could be the same car. PO owned it since 2009. Do you know if his transaction included a trade for a very well sorted early 911. Might be him, given his screen name.

As far as build costs, I too have fallen victim to that. These days (even though you couldn't tell by the two SC's I have in my warehouse) I'd much rather get a "bargain" on someone else's build. What part of South Florida are you in? It's not easy to find Porschephiles down here. Seems like they are all in hiding!

Otif,

Would like to hook up.... I live in Boca raton. PM me if you want my cell for a future meet. We are actually putting a group of P car owners together for a monthly or Bi-weekly sunday meet

That is the same car then, it was 2009! I made an offer on it, John would not budge (don't blame him). I had my shop go through that car with a fine tooth comb, was very well done, no motor at the time, it did come with a slick 915 (factory cooler).
Good luck with it and hope to meet you.

PM sent. Same car. Definitely didn't have an engine when PO bought it. Hopefully John will chime in and educate me a bit.

M5guy, I don't know who made the cage. As far as I know, it was built in 1978. Maybe Jimmy would know better.

that is a damn nice race car. does it have an scca or imsa log book? if so, it could have some vintage racing value. 77's are getting very expensive!!!!

Ferraripete,

No log books. PO did state that it's eligible for vintage racing though. I'm not too clear on the racing part of it. Is there somewhere I can contact to possibly get some info on the cars racing history, or is that something that only a vehicles owner would have?

All you need for eligibility for most vintage sanctioning groups is a car that is old enough and has the requisite safety equipment. For most groups it doesn't matter if the car has forty years of racing history, or if you built the car last year from a beater street 911 you found on eBay. Unless of course you want to be invited to Goodwood.

And there is even some wiggle room on the age of the car; for instance, I had 62 356B that I raced up a class as a 64 356C because we had converted it to disk brakes.
