new rings on 930, white smoke 300 miles later!!!

...all was really well after getting my '86 930 back together, new rings, guides, etc...though not a rebuild, i still followed waynes books as far as break in was concerned - 20 minute rev, oil change, progressively longer drives up and down hills varying revs, the like...all was fantastic...earlier in the afternoon i noticed ongoing smoke exiting tailpipe after pulling into the garage, white and stinky...shoot, i think...off for a jaunt this evening and sure enough, im being followed by a trail of smoke, only im a 911 turbo, not a jet...so i turn around and here i am...nothing to note regarding anything occurring on the last drive prior to the smoking...seems strange its happening now...not an oil overfill, and the car runs awesome!!!
...any ideas, experiences would be appreciated...
Thanks...

...just been taking bits and pieces off, following an oil trail, which must be the smoke culprit...turns out i have more oil going through - or remaining in rather - my turbo circuit than normal...why???
anyone???
...just don't let the answer be faulty rings or guides...

Is your scavenge pump working ok to scavenge the oil from the Turbo?
If you search this site there is a great procedure to check the scavenge function and Pressure function to from the Turbo.

Did you disassemble and reassemble the turbo oiling system during your "rebuild"? If yes, did you remember to include the ball bearing restrictor in the oil feed...it drops in right below where the oil pressure switch screws in. If this was omitted, you would be feeding too much oil into the turbo.

Well, hopefully, it was the check ball in the turbo circuit but, if not, it very well could be one of the two or both. New rings in used cylinders could be hit or miss without proper prep and even at that still a crap shoot. Valve guides from Porsche come already sized, so when they are pressed in by a regular machine shop they bell in the middle and usually have to be reamed to fit the stems, which means that they then become over-sized....back to where you started.

...you know since ive been searching through this oily turbo adventure, i just came across the existence of the check ball...that should have been in the front of the engine, directly underneath the oil switch-banjo bolt territory that makes up a piece of the triangle of death, right???nope, didnt have one, and have always had a bit more than a thin film of oil in the turbo lines, but since replacing all the lines-hoses-tubes-etc, only now has it really bogged the car down...the car runs fantastic, boost is smoother and more steady, and overall gallop is butter as opposed to the timid anxious jumpy-ness of 3 cylinders with broken rings...im certain the cylinders were prepped well as could be...i did have to replace one, but that stuff was done by a porsche guy i trust...
...is that an 8mm ball that works in there???whatever the case, gotta get me one of them...thanks guys for your input...

Hopefully it's this, 3.3 Turbo oil inlet

Or watch this video for how to do a scavange pump test on your car.

I think that steel ball is 9mm but thats going from foggy memory so that may not be it. Some people here have bought them from McMaster-Carr and had to buy a mess of them in a minimum purchase so someone will know the correct size and post it.

Post that question on 911 Turbo (930) Forum - Rennlist Discussion Forums if you don't get an answer here. If you havn't already.

Its sounds turbo related, but for what its worth new rings on old pistons is just something I would never do on one of these engines. If the ring lands were out of spec than the new rings will only exacerbate the problem and usually break.

...im sure the ball has not been there as long as i have owned the car...previous owner spent thousands on all the cool BIG mods all at once - and probably drove the hell out of it - the deeper i get to inspect it...k27 turbo, 1 bar spring, kokeln IC, fabspeed muffler w/ 3" tip...all add to the fun factor, but also requires a biy more attention to the maintenance detail of the 930 - because drastically different from the stock car...i had broken rings in 3 cylinders, causing oil coming to top of cylinders, and a studdering feel at even cruise...depending on your politics, you change all rings, or just the broken ones - unless you can just go on and buy the bolt on upgrade 98mm p's and c's...my existing engine parts were in spec and new rings seemed a good choice more than a risky one...i'll be the final owner of this car...we'll drive one another to the ground, she will drive me to the nuthouse - or the poorhouse - but damn, its gonna be exhilarating.....thanks all for the tips and references...i'll be looking up the man with the 9mm balls this evening...it just doesnt feel like a broken ring problem, but i will keep this post posted...

I think I have a stash of them as well, if Cole does not mind me stealing his thunder. He is a great guy. He sent me some pin stock for the scavenge pump drive , and did not ask for a penny. Thanks Cole!
Shoot me your address, and I'll see that you get one.
