Flame Thrower
So, I have a 1986 3.2 Carrera that I added a turbo to about 10 years ago. Did all the work myself with the help of this site and the internet. I am running .6 bar spring limited boost with a full width intercooler. Added a IC temp gauge before IC and after IC to monitor intake temps. Installed wide band AFR sensor and gauge to monitor rich/lean issues. Installed a fuel pressure regulator and chip from Protomotive. Installed 930 brakes, discs etc. front and rear. Fabricated a center dual GT3 exhausted using a cup exhaust modified. Awesome car and performance is amazing. Only issue was finding a clutch which could handle the 380+ HP. Did not want a full race clutch because it is not a track car and is driven regularly around town etc. Went through 3 clutches before I found a company in California that custom builds them for our cars. Dropped motor and installed and although stiffer pedal solved the WOT full boost slippage. We trailer the car to NC a couple of times a year to enjoy the roads. After engine out clutch install, took her out for a shake down drive and noticed a slight misfire. Car settled down along the way but on the way home in traffic heard a loud backfire and upon looking in the rear view mirror, saw 6” flames coming from the tea tray wing. Cut ignition, pulled over, got fire extinguisher and exited car to find the entire rear of car on fire. Put out fire and assumed I had a fuel or oil fire in the engine bay—disaster! Opened lid and zero evidence of fire or damage (my fire suppression system in the engine bay did not discharge). Turns out, when I reinstalled the engine one of the spark plug wires was not fully seated causing the misfire and raw fuel in that cylinder exiting the exhaust system and getting on the rear of the car. When the turbo reach a temp high enough to ignite the raw fuel (backfire), it threw a flame and caught the rear of the car on fire! Lesson learned. Good news is I had some clear-coat failure on the right rear fender and due to the damaged paint in the fire, insurance paid for a respay to the doors.

Holy cow Batman! That looks almost as bad as my little BBQ years ago...almost but not quite.
Had to have been pretty sustained backfire.
