Just pulled my motor

Hello

Question, on my 1978 Turbo I do not have the turbo valve covers. When did Porsche start using them. Also who is the guy that rebuilds turbos?

Thx

Durabilt seems to come highly recommended in this board for rebuilding turbos.
So does TurboKraft and RarlyL8

The lower valve covers that came on your '78 are indeed not the reinforced ones that have commonly become known as 'turbo'. However, even though they look like the ones that came on any other 911, I believe they are unique to the turbo because the material is aluminum. The 911 of that day would have had magnesium covers if I am not mistaken.

I've used Evergreen Turbo to rebuild my K27.

This is where I will be going for the Turbo rebuild. He has been highly recommended by others in my area.

wgwollet, if your turbo is a stock 3LDZ, be prepared for $$$ and a wait. The parts are NLA from BorgWarner, the turbocharger is officially obsolete.

Even getting the K2x-series rebuilt correctly has been a challenge the past few years. TurboKraft gets failed turbos in weekly with "fresh rebuilds" on them -- rebuilt with new parts that started life out-of-spec. Why? Because BW does not sell genuine piece parts to the North American market, and that leaves aftermarket parts of questionable quality. Getting quality parts for these turbochargers is much more difficult than it used to be.

Hi

Well, what do I do? I want my car factory original. It is now original, and my car has not run for a while. In fact I never heard it run because the PO died and I bought it from his daughter. So I pulled engine, and want the turbo looked at because I want everything correct.

Chris is offering good advice...also you may want to call Evergreen or Durabuilt as they as well can give you the best advice.

KKK makes the K27....

Might try finding a good used 3ldz takeoff.

Bill, What do you mean by "correct" the correct part for your car? or in correct shape to run? Since there is nothing in a turbo, like a rubber seal that goes bad in time it will run now just like it did the last time it was shut off. So are you questioning the parts inside it might not be the correct ones for a stock 78 930 and want someone to rebuild it to make sure it does not have hotrod parts in it?

As for starting an engine that sat for awhile there are seals that can start leaking which could have gone bad with time but that is just messy and not damaging.
The only dangerous thing that goes bad with these engines is the chain tensioners if they are not the oil fed type and of course anything that raw fuel touched could be in question.

Hi

If I could the current model turbo rebuilt. I now have the engine out and want to make sure turbo is ok, it looks very rusty. The seals need replaced, maybe.....I have good compression in all cylinders of 114-117. The fuel delivery system needs rebuilt too, this car is my baby plan to keep it.

So, when you say hot rod parts, yes I do not want that, people say do not remove the smog pump because it helped the turbo at low rpm's...so it's staying too.

I will contact them, thx

Wow! does look rusty. If you pull the intake hose off and the turbo spins freely it is fine. It might be worn, but so could the whole engine be worn, where do you stop? Unless you have unlimited $$ I would chose how you spend it carefully, having a turbo rebuilt because it looks bad from the outside does not make good cents
Turbo seals are steel rings like the pistons have and do not go bad sitting, if stored where they do not corrode. You will know spinning it.
I do not see how the emission air pump effects engine power in the positive
