sold turbo motor to a friend...

no turning back now on the LS conversion.

Trackrash 03-06-2020 08:57 AM

So, starting a new thread in the Conversion Forum?

911tracker85 03-07-2020 04:56 AM

yes I have a thread in the conversion forum, will update that for all motor related stuff and keep this one going for the rest of the project.

but first finish this and get it back in the car.....

Bob, best wishes on your new V8 direction, I look forward to following along. John

Being an old Chevy guy and an LS enthusiast I look forward to watching this swap. I almost traveled to Houston a few years ago to pick up one of these (uncompleted) projects. It sounds like you are working on a good plan and have a couple of mentors to help with ideas. I'll follow both threads
Good luck!

911tracker85 03-08-2020 05:37 AM

thanks guys.

focusing on getting the 951 back together before diving back into the 911.

and now have a new garage partner, moving in April 1. so need to get my stuff out of that sections of the shop for that. been nice having the space but not nice paying the full rent...

the guy who will be doing my welding is an old american muscle car guy. has a 460 motor he build with an 871 (?) supercharger and dual 4 barrels and expects it to make about 1500hp for his drag car. if I recall a 63 falcon 'light weight'... whatever that means.

Bucketlist 03-09-2020 03:28 AM

Sharing space can be a gamble, I tried this a few times in the past, never worked out. I hope you know him well.
Your welder sounds like an old school HP guy.

911tracker85 03-09-2020 04:30 AM

have a new partner since I threw out the last guy... I had known him 25 yrs and knew I was taking a bit of a chance on him. wanted to try to give him a chance to have a shop and he let me down.

do not know this guy but have spent several hours with him discussing his plan. think I found a good one.

yea Jerry is definitely an old school guy...

911tracker85 04-06-2020 05:37 AM

Well ... wondering if I should 'move' this thread to the 911 forum. no longer a 930 project.:( I started a thread in the conversion forum, but a lot of work will not relate to the engine conversion....

will decide once I get back to work on the 911.

my new partner is up and running. longer I work with him the more I am sure I got the right guy. the old shop compressor died last monday.

but the computer systems at the shop owner's main shop crashed a week ago and I was consumed with fixing the broken computer systems. after working on his computer systems for several days with some Cisco server engineers we got the raid storage recovered and the systems back up. now running all new backups to a NAS. then migrate all of his systems to a new Cisco blade server.

so with no air compress on monday, my new partner just went out and got a 26gal compressor. some people would have just stood there and cry, "help me Bob ... when are you going to fix the compressor Bob ...." not this guy.

I am now thinking I'll just get a similar or same for my side of the shop and call it done, rather than replace the big, old one.

Jerry has started work pulling the parts off the 66 mustang 289 to rebuild. almost done with my friend's 944. and almost done bolting stuff on the rebuilt 951 engine.

once again the poor 911 is 'sucking hind teet' again ...

911tracker85 06-27-2020 05:59 AM

I will not be posting to this thread any longer. have started one in the conversion forum. and just saw GM has released a new LS7, hotter cams (570hp) and wet sump and a lower price...

almost have the engine in the 951, need to remove the alternator to get it in.

new shop partner is doing great. constantly busy and his son and a friend have been cleaning up the fenced in lot, hacking down all the vines on the fence and all the weeds.

after both of us using small compressors, he has decided to get a new elec motor for the old compressor. the small one runs constantly and he figures it is only a matter of time before it buns out.

911 has been sitting recently for me to get the engine in the 951 and that back on the road. then the focus will be the 911.

and just got the rear torsion plates from Shaun. one last gratuitous pic.

and for those interested, here is the link to my conversion thread.

after over 15 yrs of owning/working on a number of Porsche 944, 951, 928, and an 85 911, I have decided it is time to stop racing and wrenching and take up flying.

I have had this project for almost 7 yrs and it has been 'sucking hind teet' to all the other cars. have sold them and now down to this project and a 87 924S project I will probably do as a safari.

it is stripped to the tub, on a rotisserie, and mostly sand blasted to bare metal and ready for primer. but dont have the enthusiasm to do the work to finish. rather be flying now.

would appreciate thoughts on a value.

sold the badly abused 930 motor. have a 930 4sp gearbox. other than no engine everything is there, with a lot of upgraded stuff. was thinking LS conversion.

would appreciate ideas of value and hearing from anyone interested. make me an offer I cannot refuse.

Even more so than a 930, it offers an unparalleled opportunity for personal bankruptcy :D

911tracker85 08-05-2021 05:03 AM

and I did not even start with a small fortune....

Sold the car entirely? Was excited to see the LS swap come to fruition but is probably the smarter financial decision.

not long ago I connected with another guy in the middle of a build. after a few discussions and looking at his thread I have become very interested in doing an LS3 or maybe an LS7 conversion.

so let the flaming and fireworks begin.....

not unfamiliar with these conversions but had not originally though of doing this. maybe when I realized the engine needed a total rebuild....

so not researching info and am being drawn to the LS conversion...

What a buzz kill post… lol

^^^^^^^ x10

The more and more threads I read, I remember I need to drive these cars even if they have some minor issues and the paint isn't perfect. Or else you'll end up just wrenching on it for the next guy.
