Removing/installing synchro hubs

To get ready for my 930 engine/gbox rebuild I've been reading all the rebuild threads I can find to see what I'm getting into and to see what special tools I'll have to make. No concerns yet but one question I have is getting the rings off the gears. Has anyone tried chucking up the gear in a 3-jaw and cutting off the ring in a lathe? I'm sure it would take longer than using the special tool but I have a lathe. I guess the other alternative is the cut off wheel. Also after shrinking on the new hub does it get tig'd to the gear? One poster in an old thread said that should be done to make sure the ring doesn't walk off the gear?

Dog teeth's can also be removed with a chisel if you do it carefully and with patience.

Yes, I read that, that method scares me. Here is the thread that recommends welding the new hub to the gear.

With the new hub being a shrink fit to the gear I question the necessity of welding it on. But I'll defer to the pro's on that. I've rebuilt other g-boxes but never a 930. Another part of the rebuild process that appears to be critical is checking the ID of the gear in the area under the new synchro hub to make sure it matches the ID under the gear teeth and hone to match if necessary. A smaller ID after the hub is shrunk on leads to needle bearing failure as witnessed by a couple DIY's on here.
