Air filter replacement for my 930

Hi have the following air filter from Fabspeed on my 81' 930, which is broken so I'm trying to replace it. It's almost $300 new. Anything else that could directly replace for cheaper? I have aftermarket intercooler and other stuff so the stock would not work.

This fits perfectly and many on this forum use it (including me). The opening at the base is the exact size of the air metering body intake opening, and the height of the filter is perfect, too. You do need to cut or grind a small half-moon in in the rubber down at the bottom (the widest part of the filter) so that it is not pressed up tight against the idle mixture adjustment plunger. It is a little bit tricky putting the filter in place if you do not want to wrinkle it up. One person on here lowered his engine slightly, but I figured out how to angle it in there so that I could install it without damaging/crushing/wrinkling any of the pleats.

Here's how it looks installed, and I think you can make out what I mean by cutting a spot for the metering plunger in the first picture (if not, I can try to take a better one).

Hey Ronnie...that looks like just the "filter". OP probably need the filter housing to attach it to the intake opening? No?

How do you vent the crank case in this set up? Atmosphere? I thought the original crank case vent went into the stock air filter housing.

Thanks

Rahl, that K&N is basically the exact same thing as the Fabspeed/BMC but just shaped differently (one piece filters/rubber housings), and each are secured by a large hose clamp (like you noticed).

Will, yes vent to atmosphere. In factory trim, the crankcase actually vents to an oil & vapor separator and then vents from there to the air filter housing by way of a "y" hose that also joins with the oil tank vent. So the "best" thing to do with a filter like this is add a catch bottle and put the hose that normally goes to the factory air cleaner there, and then run a hose from the catch bottle's vent and out and under the car by way of the gap that is near the right shock tower (where the factory a/c hoses go). That way, the fumes are not vented into the engine bay where they are blown all over the place by the fan - would obviously suck big time (like Paul) if you ran the heat with it vented like that.

I have the same one. IIRC it was less than $40 delivered from Amazon.

$300 for an air filter is just plain stupid.
The cone filter is $40 and works better as it takes up less space.

Hey Paul!

I got a rear clip and driver's fender (FINALLY) from DC Automotive. The doner is a Hurricane Sandy loss. The car goes to the shop next week for a little TLC.

I have two seasons of driving to make up for and looking forward to it.

Thanks for asking.

Will

The filter is a K&N # E-3270. It fits right on the throtle body - same diameter.
The carrier/holder is a standard product you can get at any parts store. Mine was chromed, I painted it black (outside only). You only use the top half, drilled two holes to use the OEM hold down bolts.
You'll have to notch the bottom lip of the filter to accomodate for the mix adjusting flex bolt, which is located about 2 o'clock of the opening, if you know what I mean - no biggy here. Off the shelf stuff = a peculiar sound and clearer engine bay.

Paul,

I like to think of it as the car now has self inflicted provenance on a historic race track.

glad I saw this thread. wanted to know where to find these alternate air cleaners.

I have stripped out the entire AC. not sure if the catch can would fit where the AC compressor was, but also considering a full bay Turbocraft IC. so replacing the stock air cleaner body is where I think I'll end up to have space for mounting the oil catch can.
