Input shaft seal picture
 

I got this part from our host. But it doesn't seem to fit. I'm sure I need to reorder but who can get me a picture how it's installed on a 930 input shaft? It's got me confused. Does the shaft seal seal on the shaft itself? That would mean it stretches over the splines. That would confirm this part I got is wrong. Thanks.

Ok then at least tell me what is wrong with these pictures.

Don't tell me it goes inside the gearbox because I've already got that sealed up.

I don't know but I think that input shaft is going to wipe out the seal the first time you use it judging by the pics.

it needs wire brushing I know but I think it goes inside now no?

Not throwing stones but that shaft should have been polished to a fine finish in a lathe with 400 wet or dry and a light oil. I think I would split it again and take that shaft to a machine shop for a polish. A wire brush won't do the job IMO and it will wipe the new seal. The exception would be if the seal point of contact on the shaft is where you can get some emery cloth on it. Only polish in a circular motion around the circumference, do not polish in an axial motion along the shaft. I'm sure that will bring some comments.:rolleyes:

That seal has to go in from the outside, I can't believe they'd design it so the trans has to be taken apart to install a new input seal.

Plus the clutch disk can snag on the splines, stay in contact of pressure plate, resulting in excess drag on the syncros during shifting.

And use a quality lubricant!!!

That really is a "curious" design!

I looked that seal up on the PET for Brandon a few days ago, but the picture/drawing of the case assembly does not make it clear that the seal goes on from inside the gearbox (I know, I said "inside box") - really weird.

Yeah it's looking ominous. The shaft has no smooth area for the seal like on the more common 915. I think it goes inside.

I have never seen that seal as a recommended replacement as a "while you're in there" seal/gasket replacement while the motor/trans is out. I have replaced virtually every seal/gasket on my motor that I could and that wasn't on my list. That may mean that you have to split the trans to replace it...

I think I've got a 930 trans shop manual in my piles of crap I'm going to see if I can find it. I think that seal might go into the input shaft tube that bolts to the front of the diff case.

Hmm...it looks like you got it all wrong. The seal goes into the seal tube the runs through the gearbox above the diff. You do not need to split the gearbox. Below are the photos that may help you.

Note the end outline in red...that's where the seal goes.

Once the tube is removed you can replace the seal. Be careful removing the seal as shown below.

That seal you have looks like it is for the trans end of the seal tube, the seal for the clutch end looks like an O ring - #1 in the 2nd pic. Been looking for my 930 shop manual for an hour and finally I realized I lent it to a friend a couple years ago! I'm seeing him next week and I told him to bring it along! Damn, I thought I lost it! Looks like you are good to go as long as you can polish the shaft where the 0 ring rides.

Looking at it again the o ring just seals between the seal tube and case so you shouldn't have to do anything unless you want to change that inner seal.
