1988 Turbo Chain Tensioners
Hi guys
I seem to be suffering from chain clackety clack. I believe my chain Tensioners are on the way out. Engine is a fresh rebuild with maybe 200 miles. I have good oil pressure. Engine sounds normal when cold, as it warms up clackety noise increases. I check chain boxes with stethoscope and definite noise coming from that area. Are existing Tensioners serviceable? Or do I have to purchase new? Also what precautions do I need to take when replacing them? I plan on replacing them with motor in the car. I will post some videos tonight. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks John

My plan is to pull the chain box covers and check the Tensioners out tomorrow.
Do I have to drain the oil?

I have a theory that the weight of the oil and temperature has an effect on how well the tensioners work. As temperature goes up oil thins out, which equals more clack.
Does this sound feasable? I'm using Joe Gibbs 15W50 HR Conventional. http://www.drivenracingoil.com/dro/hr1-conventional-15w-68html/

Pulled the chain box covers. Drivers side tensioner seemed to have some give, I was able to compress the sprocket arm about an 1/8", oil came out of the bleed hole
now it's rock hard. Passenger side tensioner seems suspect. I am able to move the sprocket arm 1/8"to 1/4"" repeatedly. I am definitely going to replace the passenger side, should I replace drivers side as well? Also what is opinion on Sebro units? or should get the Porsche units. Thanks John

Question about the Part No. listed 930-105-058-03 on Pelican Site. The number on my tensioner is 930 105 547. Am I okay to order this with 930-105-058-03?

Is that the collar? I'd try the collar but also what weight is your oil?

How old are those tensioners? I might just install the collars because it eliminates the possibility for complete failure. But replacing the tensioners might be best for the sound and loose chain issue. I once replaced the adjustable solid tensioners with hydrolic and then later felt like I made a bit of a mistake. Pressure fed is cool, and it's what I'm using but I decided that when the pressure fed ones got old I'd just go mechanical. They have ability to mechanically tighten like the valves. I like that.

I believe tensioners are original, so 27 years.

I've used 930 tensioners with collars, pressure fed with collars and modded arms and never an issue. For a high use/ mileage car I would probably stick with one of the above. This time around I went with JB racing solids, car might see 2k miles a year and after break in will adjust and every year after but zero chance of failure....

What are thoughts on repriming? Guy that rebuilt the engine may not have done it?

What do you mean? After 200 miles I would think its properly primed itself.

I was reading in Wanyne's book that a faulty installation will produce a weak tensioner and rattling. If the tensioners are not bled properly, air bubbles will prevent it from doing it's job.
I was thinking that I could remove the existing tensioners, soak them in an oil bath, and then try to get all the air bubbles out. Reset the plunger pin, re-install, and pull the pin. Possibly saving my self $860.00

Hi Guys
Passenger side tensioner has been replaced. Doing drivers side tonight. Used a couple of small turnbuckles to hold the idler arm in place. Worked great. Question, is it recommended to use sealant on the paper chain box gaskets? Thanks John

I did on the paper gaskets in the transmission. It was suggested that it be done and is a standard procedure when using paper. If it's cardboard paper that's diffrent. These engines love to leak so I try and alleviate wherever I can. I just put on the silicone valve cover gaskets because they look nice. Hope they help.
As far as your chain cover Id use some sealant there. Just not blue or red ![]() |
