1978 930 special order paint codes

The paint code on the I D plate for a 1978 930 is 867. Anyone know what color it is? Thanks.

If you can get access to a parts Catalogue from that year it should be listed at the beginning of the document. At least that is the case for the 911 84-86 PET Catalogue.

I am searching myself. Also on a 78 930.
Mine was supposedly delivered as one of two in flat/matte black. Have not been able to confirm this on the records, yet.
Everything on the car seems to indicate some sort of flat black. Its current color is silverish blue. I want it back to original.
Sorry to hijack

Please let me know if you find a source of knowledge on this.

I, too have been curious about these special colors. I have an 89 930 with a paint plate of a 70's color. 89's shouldn't even have paint plates on the door area as it did in the 70's and early 80's.

Any info would be much appreciated.

I have a question regarding special order paint. If someone back in say the 80's walks in to a Porsche dealer and says paint my car 1969 Chevy Cortez Silver and provides the appropriate paint code how was the door tag stamped?

Did they use the actual Chevy paint code? Glasurit or whatever paint system they were using? Or did they assign a new one? I see someone noted the above matches a Benz paint code and am wondering how they would note it on the tag. I love special colors and odd combos and always have a hard time with the tag colors.

Thanks and I hope this helps the original poster.

Nope, it's not green. I checked under the floor mats and it is the same as the top of the car. Redish Burgandy. I bought it from the original owner since 1978 who special ordered it this color and it is the original color. I have a color to sample 79 930 ( Yellow) so I will look to see what the paint code is on that one. I am looking at the codes on the A pillar. Is there another place they might be stamped?

No not the same car as mine is not for sale and I have owned it for over 12 years. Mine was upgraded by AJUSA ( Alan Johnson Racing) back in 82-83 although the one you referenced is a very similar color. My 1979 is color to sample on the factory window sticker.

Oh forgot a photo. AJ Racing in San Diego was able to source special parts as they were involved in with the special order factory customer race car building back in the 70s- 80s. This car was built for street driving and light track use. We took out the roll bar otherwise I believe it is as built in the early 80s with under body ducted brakes Weltmeister adjustable suspension and motor with around 350hp and airport gears in trans axle. Definitely "old school" build.

Tony, I think this color is called Rennrot which would translate to Racing Red. It is a Skoda color.

Jay is also correct in that 867 is also a Mercedes color. Caledonia Green.

I am totally stumped on the yellow car. That paint code does not seem to exist in any of my material.
Porsche offered Signal yellow #114, Light yellow #117 in 77, and Talbot yellow #106 for the 79 model year.
Your car is not Talbot, is darker than light yellow.. and I'm not sure what Signal looks like. I even checked Ferrari Fly yellow as that was a popular paint to sample. Its not that one either!

Your car should have a decal located on the passenger side of the front tub near above the spare tire. However, being that it is a Euro car, and Special Wishes.. it may not. Color Code should be there too.

[onboost;6528996] and others who may want to chime in,

I spoke to the original fellow who ordered the car as a color yellow he wanted. So no surprise it is not a known color as he sent in a paint sample for this color. He was from Chicago area and saw it at the racetrack @ Road America a few years ago. When I showed him the window sticker he said that it was his car and wanted to buy it on the spot albeit 25 years later. Back then it was sent to a dealer in San Antonio TX. instead of Chicago, who had a customer who wanted it. The rest is known history when I bought it 12 years ago.Chicago guy got tired of waiting over 4 months for it to be built and took another one from inventory, to his regret.

But to the point where did Porsche decide how to code these special color to sample cars or was it just a number they pulled out of the air. I see no rhyme or reason for these random code selections yet.

Here is the photo of the paint code, could it be Rennrot ( racing red )? Still confused of the paint codes as they seem just random selection. In a previous discussiion on the forum the conclusion by some that all color to sample cars were code 999 in a certain year and went numerically higher.

Thanks, that sounds like the right name for the color. Is it in a color chart of European colors? Maybe Porsche just used the codes from that chart for their color to sample special paint orders.

I have a '66 911 with a color code that made no sense initially only to find out later thru its KARDEX that it was a "one off" special color ordered for export to Bahrain.

Anyone ever see the the '76, '77, 78, and '79 930s all special painted Blood Orange for the same customer in Colorado? Unfortunately the collection was split up and sold some years ago.

I own the "Blood Orange" '79 from that collection. It is all original with just under 5,000 original miles.
