Gasket Sealants
A couple of years ago my clutch puck wore out, and as a result, put a new clutch system in, as well as, redoing the top end since I had the engine out. Prior to and subsequent to those fixes, the thing just runs soooo good. Shortly thereafter, I did a couple of bolt on mods (spring, headers, and K27) and am really loving the power it now produces, too.
Not too long ago, I noticed the smell of burning oil and noticed oil dripping from between the number one can and the crankcase onto the header. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the thin copper gasket between the can and the case had broken and where it was separated and trying to work it self out of the seat, was where the oil dripping occurred. Last weekend, I pulled the engine and took off the number 1 and 2 cans (took off number 2 just to make sure it wasn't leaking from that one, too), but left 3 in place and didn't even touch the right side (4, 5, and 6) since the engine is running so well. I know gasket sealants have been discussed, before, but I can't seem to find that/those threads. And I remember, specifically, members talking about sealants between the cans and case. There seemed to be a couple of favorites but I can't remember them. Can somebody give me a heads up on what to use and how to use it between those two surfaces? Also, I'm going to purchase a new gasket set, and as such, change out a number of gaskets. What do you guys use for sealants (if any) for the intake, oil cooler, oil pump, valve covers, etc.? Any help is much appreciated! |

I thought only the cooper sleeve was used there. Try the engine rebuild section. There are many looking there that have that knowledge right now.

I used blue Hylomar on those when I did mine and it's never leaked or sweated oil. It's real hard to find it now.
More recently I've used Hondabond 4 that you can buy in tubes at the Honda motorcycle dealer parts dept for around $7 a tube and it never hardens. I've used it on the cam towers and chain cases, it stays flexible and has not leaked oil. Yamaha uses the same stuff and they call it Yamabond. It's actually Threebond 1194 that has been rebranded. |

Yes, I installed them dry, last time, but just wanted extra protection to never have to go through a silly engine pull just because a can was leaking. I remember the thread/posts about a a difficult to acquire sealant (Hylomar) that was highly regarded by Jim and others. I just couldn't remember what it was...And the ensuing discussion of a suitable replacement because it was hard to find.
Thank you for your advice, Jim! Much appreciated!! Last edited by icemann427; 06-01-2015 at 10:56 AM.. |

I put a very thin layer of loctite 574 on the base gaskets. So far, so good (15k miles later)
