SDS CPI Ignition System
In search of a new electronic ignition for my 930 i have found the solution from SDS.
They have a new CPI System (CPI is a programmable, stand alone, crank triggered, distributorless ignition system for 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines. I had 2 other manufacturers in the Line MSD with the 6530 Unit and Electromotive with the XDI-II. For me it was important that i have map sensor and a active knock retard. Ross from SDS was very helpful and has a good support. Here some Infos: SDS EM-5: CPI I have already received the CPI unit from SDS, now i have to wait of some other Parts for Installation. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442158908.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442158931.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442158943.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442158954.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1442158973.jpg |
in the same process. needing / wanting to find a great, newer generation ign system for my 930 project.
do they make a system for twin plug? my '78 930 engine had a full crank up rebuilt in 1990 with a early generation electromotive. but definitely planning to upgrade. should be dropping the engine/tranny next weekend to start the engine rebuild. I'll be watching. |
That looks like a pretty slick system. Lets us know how the install goes.
Megajolt is another option for those looking. http://www.autosportlabs.net/Megajolt_Lite_Jr. |
Sds
I have used a SDS system for the last 5 years. It is a good introduction to EFI for the novice. Has all the features to make your car run properly, and very user friendly. Backup support is excellent, which is very important for do-it -your-selfers. I would recommend the use/product this company sells for our cars. ;)Philip

I am also using the SDS system, with a twin plug motor. I have to agree with Phillip,
very easy system to get up and running. Tech support is excellent, always just an email away. |

There were a couple of versions.. if you're using the old HPV1 system for ignition and fuel mgmt.. then yes an upgrade is probably due. However, if your system is just controlling spark, they worked pretty darn good.. very simple set-up... unless the lack of map sensor is an issue. |

You guys have full ignition and fuel controlling correct? Either way seems like good stuff. Good luck with the set-up! |
I have had an Sds based solution on both my last 2 airplanes. I can't comment on the Porsche application, but the Sds unit is well made and a quality product.

I plan to retain the CIS but definitely want to upgrade to a modern ign system that can control spark advance/retard based on boost to protect what will be a rebuild on this engine. I have not researched enough to determine if there are any systems that can inject a knock detector into the mix. all ready to drop the engine/tranny this coming week.:D |
The SDS CPI system allows for a knock sensor to be added. As does the SDS 6F EFI system.
|
The reason for the purchase of the SDS CPI system was i have a well-functioning CIS System an good AFR values (Fuelhead modified, BL WUR with RPM Switch, new 009 Injectors...
The SDS CPI is only controlling ignition, but this is fine for me. Important for me active Knock control and of course spark advance/retard based on boost and that fully programmable. |
Thomas, what was involved in mounting the Hall sensor? Did you use the stock pulley?
Thanks. |
Simply specify to SDS if you need the CPI to fire twin plugs and they will configure it for you.

Start of assembly (ok first Engine out)
Now is winter time and i have a little bit more time for that project.
First i pull my engine out (i will also change my sound-/isolation mat). http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450727908.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450727920.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450727949.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450727968.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1450727988.jpg |
Installing Knock Sensor
One of the positiv thing is the active knock control that the SDS provides.

Bracket and Hall Sensor
The SDS manuel for the installation is very well described.
1. you have to set the pulley to TDC on cyl. 1 (I did it with a dial gauge with extension) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1452339136.jpg Locating of trigger and sync magnet: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1452339279.jpg Before i removed the pulley i marked the position from the hall sensor and the first trigger magnet: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1452339493.jpg |

I had to turn and drill my pulley:
