EFI with Carrera intake on turbo 3.0 SC

It's with great sadness that I give up on K-Jetronic CIS.

From the start turbo charging the SC CIS has given obstacles to overcome which in the main has been fun and interesting. But it just keeps on giving problems and after one problem is solved another arises.
I' think I'll always just be on the edge of what it can do with little margin for future upgrades.

Due to this it's time to go EFI. I'm sure there will also be obstacles to over come with this install but at least once its done it should handle the boosted application and allow for future upgrades.

So the plan is to use a Carrera 3.2 intake complete with fuel runners, throttle body etc and Microsquirt ECU.

List of parts to go EFI (Let me know if I'm missing anything) :

3.2 Carrera intake
Upgraded injectors
Carrera 41mm intake to SC manifold adaptor set (from TurboKraft)
Microsquirt v3 ECU & harness
3bar MAP sensor
Engine temp sensor
Air Temp sensor
Fuel line
Fuel line T piece's etc
Rising rate fuel pressure regulator
O2 exhaust sensor

Plus various clamps, clips and sundry parts...

I'm looking at running a simple setup at first just controlling the fueling and then later timing.

Really good idea. I followed your problems with the sc parts and felt bad for you. EFI would be good for you at this point.
It used to be that you could buy 930 fuel and intake parts easily but those are hard to find and afford.

If I could of found a 930 complete CIS intake at the right price I would of stayed CIS as the FrankenCIS setup is fantastic plus Mike's support from Dkubus was great too, he really wanted the project to work.
The 930 parts are just so dam expensive now.

Some good news.....
I will be able to keep the Microsquirt v3 controller I have plus the sensors
Just need to get a fresh new harness, transfer the sensors over and add the injectors etc to it.
I can flash the firmware of the Microsquirt back to factory fresh ready for EFI.

Contacted Chris at TurboKraft and the Carrera to 930 heads adaptor they do will also work for the SC heads.
I will try and remove the CIS this weekend and I can measure the head port size just to be sure I give the correct info when I order.
I also asked about injectors and was asked in return "Injector size also depends on fuel pressure and whether batch, semi-, or full sequential".

Steve (FrankenCIS) said I would be running 'batch' injection but I have no idea about fuel pressure, I was going to leave the 044 pump, SC filter and SC accumulator in place as they do on the Bitzracing EFI conversion!

I would post a "looking for cis" here. Seems some number of guys going to efi have these setups laying around.

Microsquirt will work just fine for your application. It has 2 banks of injectors for a batch fire or semi-sequential fire. You will probably need something around 39 lb/hr injectors. These will work fine up until you cross the 375-ish HP range. Bigger injectors do not necessarily work better. You will want high-impedance injectors.

The -044 pump will work great. Plenty of flow for your needs. You will want to purchase a fuel pressure regulator and plumb into the return line of your system. There are fixed pressure and adjustable pressure regulators. Typical system pressure is 43-45psi (3 Bar). I use pressure compensated regulators that will raise system pressure with boost. This allows the injection pressure to remain constant as manifold pressure increases.

Thanks jpnovak, I'm following your conversion and was hoping you might be able to help out
Great info, just what I needed. I'll see what I can sort out for injectors and the rising regulator.

Thanks

Carrera intake arrived, spent a few hours today stripping and cleaning it all up.

You gave it a good try. EFI is the way to go for your application.

First of the noob questions

Is it best to run the injectors in BANK or BATCH fire mode?

I'm assuming CIS was basically like BATCH fire so all the injectors fired at the same time, but all the time, just varying the amount of fuel.

The EFI injectors will be high impedance so if I'm right they don't need resistors?

MS2 (or microsquirt in your case) is batch fire only. Two separate banks wired to MS according to crank rotations. Bank1 covers first 360deg rotation - cylinders 1,6,2 and Bank2 covers second 360deg rotation - Cyl 4,3,5. Set software to "alternating".

No resistors required for low-Z injectors.

It was certainly a relief after 3 hours in the dark with only an LED torch.
Liberating to think I can now push on with the EFI conversion and hopefully get it a running as planned finally

More thoughts on the easiest way to go forwards.

I managed to remove only 6 of the 12 intake studs yesterday even after soaking them with WD40 Specialist Penetrant 4 days in a row.
I REALLY don't want to break any studs as I've read how much of a ball ache it can be to then remove broken studs.

So upon a rethink the other option to make things easy as possible would be to keep the SC intake runners and as the plastic airbox is a weak point have a replacement fabbed in ally, like this :

The cost of the ally airbox would be offset by selling the Cerrera intake and not having to purchase the Carrera intake to SC head adaptors!

I can then purchase the Bitzracing EFI kit but with bigger injectors.
Flat6pilot has informed me I could always upgrade the MS1 ECU to MS2 with a daughter board and Firmware update, which I didn't know.

The harness and basic Map would then all be pre done.
I wouldn't have to get adaptors to for the Carrera intake and install longer studs the fuel connection's etc would easier plus throttle linkage, I know some of these are only small things but every bit I can make easier is a plus for me.

Don’t waste your time with a set up as per above. Just use the 3.2 manifold. See if you can dig up my old thread on the EFI/Turbo swap. It will have all the info you could need and the pit falls.
I’ve just done the swap to EFI with my 930 engine but I sold all the CIS stuff in less than a couple hours.

PB Blaster penetratnt and a MAPP gas torch using double-nut removal via a deep sockey on a long bar, will eventually break those studs free.

Uncle what spacers did you use and did you have to install longer intake manifold studs?
