Hi all I have twin Garrett ball bearing turbos to use on my 3.4 build .. My question is what is better turbos with built in wastgates or turbos with external wastegates.. I have turbos with built in wastegates for my engine... the factors I looked at was room and the complexity of all the pipe work to run them external.. What are others using and what are there opinions....

Integral wastegates are mainly all pluses, but ....
If you are going to use open loop control (just a hose from the intake to the wastegate actuator), that can take some time to get right. They are normally shipped with a light spring for electronic control, unless you made a special arrangement. All the exhaust goes through the outlet pipe. That can mean as much as 40% more exhaust flow, which must be considered in order to keep the backpressure under control. The 930 external wastegate was switched to its own little exhaust system in 1986, which added about 15 horsepower, so this is a well known factor. |

Borg Warner has a big selection of small frame internally wastegated turbos.
