Camshaft welding by Tighe Cams - don't ...

As part of the "while I'm in there" story, which is closely linked to the "slippery slope" story, I decided to get my turbo cams built up and reground to SC profile.
A company called Ivan Tighe Engineering in Brisbane Australia (also trading as Tighe Cams on the net) was recommended by several acquaintances so I duly sent my cams off more than seven weeks ago for what was promised as a two week turnaround job.
Apart from the continual promises of "they'll be ready to ship tomorrow or the day after", you've got to question the guy's workmanship.
They arrived home today - pictures tell a thousand words ...

Almost all lobes have transverse cracks and pitting. Impressive eh!
To make matters worse, they were sent back with a grey paint-like finish on all lobes which hid what was lying below. It washed off easily with petrol and felt slippery so it might have been some kind of assembly lube. I almost decided to leave it in place!
There is no way this guy could not have seen these cracks and pits before he painted them.

Tomorrow, we start negotiations about where we go from here.
Regardless, it looks like I'm in the market for some real SC cams.

WOW, that's horrible. Good luck to you. I've got a set of SC cams I'd sell but they will require reworking.

mmmm, that's nasty! Especially that last picture with the void. FWIW, I got my SCs from Imagine Auto.

WOW! I take it they are going to reimburse you for a pair of screwed up cams!

How much is a new pair of SC cams? Are they readily available?

When I rebuilt my engine, I debated to go with re-ground cams because the 964 cams were out of stock and back ordered. I decided in the long run it would be better to wait for new.

Good luck!

LOL Jeff! Your stash of FAS (funny as $hit) pix is quite impressive.

Billjam, all you can really do in the face of such a blantant slipshod work is laugh to keep from punching someone. This a$$ clown of a company should refund your hard earned $$$$ with interest.

I just received this reply to my email requesting refund or replacement cams. At least he didn't argue about it (mind you, I don't have the $$ yet!).

I just love the line about them being usable. These things must be akin to hand grenade pins.

Is he going to credit you for the work done only? What about your now useless cams?

Nice set of Grenades you have there...

That was assembly lube on the CAMS, basically a Moly Coating. I don't believe he'll pay you for your CAMS, he only really has to say send them to me and we'll re do them to avoid anything else legally. He also will know it is not worth the fuss you to go to court. You're screwed on those CAMs unfortunately. Thanx for the Heads-up on a Slip shod operation.

Yep, he is refunding the work only. It's not just that I have to now find some SC cams and modify them (for pump drive), but my engine has sat half-assembled for more than a month waiting for this jerk.

They're not totally useless.
I'm thinking matching bedside lamp stands (won't she be impressed )

I've bought two sets of Regrinds from IA. I can "somewhat" recommend them. The problem is that the base of the base circle is ground all the way down to the CAM itself and makes the adjustment range on the Valve Lash adjuster kinda screwey like you almost are at the end of the adjustment.

When I do this again, I will just get billet Cams from Web-Cam, I've used them before for about 25 years, and they have really nice CAMs, and do a lot of Porsche grinds. If you have to come up with Donor CAMs and then regrind, Web-Cams would be about the same price or so.

I will look for a set of SC cams here (in Oz) first.
Thanks for the offer Les - maybe later if I can't find what I want.
