My First Ever Engine Out Service

So the time had come where a valve adjust was needed & some other minor things like O.P. sending unit was bad & leaking. From the forums it seemed both were a bear to do with the engine in the car so I made the decision to drop it. Firstly, I wish to thank Pelican & the Forum & the folks who post on here. With out this I probably would have been UN-inclined to do this on my own. I am a capable wrench but the specialty of the 911-930 is not such that anyone should just go & do this seat of pants. That being said this thread will chronicle my service & personal accounts of the so called "Slippery Slope" I do have the advantage of a two post lift so will not get into the floor level engine drop. STEP 1 prepare properly

My method of keeping disconnected lines & wires in order was colored electrical tape.

Moving right along, A checklist was mandatory for this job so I found one on here & did modify it to suit my needs. As a tip we all know by know that a motor/trans drop is the recommended method. One thing that confused me is all the books I read state to disconnect throttle at console... Sure if you could get to the console & remove the safety clip on the ball that know one ever really expressed here. I just disconnected throttle at trans mount then when motor is out you can separate at console to remove trans.

So now after a few cold adult beverages in celebration of not screwing up YET, I started gaining access to this O.P. sender. Thank you Porsche for over engineering the most ridiculous A/C bracket I ever had the bad fortune of getting to know. It should be able to survive a moon shot yet still never blow cool air Well done Lads...

I was always able to see the unit but never able to get a tool on it. More pics to follow. Right now I have to figure out a way to misappropriate a few thousand dollars for a set of RarlyL8 headers.... Stand by!!

Thanks Guys, hope all is well Rey. So next up, lets see about this secondary air injection pump & associated plumbing
Yet another wonderfully over engineered pollution control device. This engine is a ROW with no O2 sensor or Cat but did come with sec air injection...

And away you go, be certain to remove the studs as they will be a PITA when you reach around back there, right Paul krasuskyp??

The good news for me is after judicious application of Kroil, no studs broken on exhaust & if it is to be believed the spider plumbing came off with zero curse words.....

how far are you going with the work?

I just got mine dropped. planning a full engine rebuild and obtained a proper 930 4sp to replace the 915.

good luck and keep posting ideas for getting around challenges.

wish I had your space and lift, and that mine was as clean. actually planning to have a couple guy come over soon, move stuff out, and clean this place out before winter sets in and I start tearing down the engine.

Would you mind sharing your source for the air injection plugs? I've bought some from the host, but my engine keeps spitting them out. Looking for alternatives.

Thanks!

Bob & Pat, thanks for the kind words. As for the plugs they are sourced from Patrick Motorsports, I think the same as our host sells. As for them getting spit out hmmmmm, I did not locktite them not sure if I should. Anyone chime in with their experiences. Bob, this engine will not need a rebuild but I am replacing the clutch, Pressure plate throw out Bearing & as said earlier just ordered a RarelyL8 header set.

So here are some pics of the old clutch plate!! I never thought it was the old style with the rubber damper. Looks to be 1989 vintage. P O did state he had an engine out reseal at that time so I assume they did a clutch plate, but the fact that its old style surprised me. I will say that the rubber is still pliable & disc is not overly worn. That being said I will be installing KEP disc & aluminum pressure plate. The weight saving is remarkable compared to stock PP!!

So while I have engine removed I installed a 911 Pad keeper. Cleaned up the engine bay nice even though my sound pad is in very good shape.

Wow that pad looks the bomb! I just hate the solution Porsche went with. My engine is going out tomorrow so that gets me thinking.

So different than my 79 engine.

Good progress!

Here's some info on the air injection plugs, mine are like the ones in this thread, I might look into safety wiring to each other. I use red locktite, but once every year or so one falls out.

those dam air injector plugs

That pad keeper looks good, haven't seen that before, keep up the good work!

Loctite is not a good solution as the head gets hot enough to melt the loctite which then acts as a lubricant. Staking them is a better option.

that is on my wish list. but a long way away from needing that.

where did you get that pad? never seed one before.

and do you cut out the section of the factory pad where is fits? I installed a new pad, but not as clean a look as what you used.

Thanks guys very interesting about the allen plugs. I could safety wire it. As for the pad keeper look for user WYD-BDY... His name is David Etter out of Colorado. PM him for details. I did not cut out the section of stock pad. It comes like that from the factory to access air filter screws.

Never had any issue with the air injection delete plugs on my '79.

Nice work Alex. Hope you are having fun. I'm close to final assembly on my 3.0L race engine:

Alex, looks like you're following a super detailed oriented process with that clean 930 of yours. You'll be fine.
FWIW, I've had no trouble with my injection plugs in 20k miles now, but I did throw two extra in the glove box in case one falls out far afield. Good insurance.
Have you considered running your trans up to Gary Fairbanks in Norwalk CT? How's the time if you have the slightest concern about syncros.
