964 cam housing on 930
Hi all, first post for the newby.
For my first post I would like to know the advantage of having 964 cam housings on a 930 engine. As I have only now discovered this after owning my 78 930 for nearly 14 years. |

I can't imagine there's any benefits to using 964 housings other than maybe better sealing on the rocker cover gaskets which are different type of seal compared to the flat gaskets used on 911 and 930 rocker covers. You would have to use 964 rocker covers with the 964 housing because the studs on the 964 are M6, but studs on 911 are M8.
Otherwise, 911 and 964 housings are the same as far as I am aware.

Thankyou for your reply Bill.
I could not understand why a previous owner would have replaced the cam housings. |

1989 930 engines came with 964 part number cam housings , why ? I'm not sure, but my 89 engine has them.

This is getting interesting.
When I purchased my 930 I ran a check with Porsche Australia to confirm the 930's origin and found that it was a Japanese factory right hand drive and the engine no. was not the original. Therefore it is possible that the engine maybe from a later 80's model with the 964 numbered cam housings. The mistery deepens. |

Hello helios965,
I do not have any pics of the motor at the moment. My Porsche is at my mechanics as the turbo has blown something last weekend. While driving at 110klm all of a sudden I could not see out my rear window except for clouds of smoke she obviously dumped a tonne of oil into the motor. No noise on start up though so I am hoping that it will not be to catastrophic. I had the rear wheels of a week or so ago as I am looking at changing them and that was when I noticed the 964 no. on the cam housing. |
