MODIFY your 930 or NOT
Given the recent value changes in these great classics, would you prefer to leave the 'ole' 930 in stock form or just dont care and want the baddest and fastest beast around ?
What are your thoughts ? Enjoy this video, but generally I went with the minor mods easily reversed in a weekend while a buddy of mine went balls to the walls and can no longer revert back but it is fast as hell What is the latest consensus ? https://youtu.be/9gFnHzYi9Yc Enjoy |
In my opinion, to leave any high performance cars in their as delivered, full of compromises, overly neutered states is to do a real disservice to the spirit and intent of those machines. The rising (now stalled) value situation does nothing but give me something else to chuckle about (the "something" being the "stock stock stock market's hot hot hot" guys). :)

Sorta like saving your gf for the next guy!!

I like Ronnie's post and I see the value of originality as these chunks of drivable metal are collector car$, street cars, and track cars all at the same time.
|
Elon Musk had a Mclaren F1 as his daily driver.
You achieved owning an original that had good performance in that period but if you are driving it today, my vote would be to modify it. If you are scared about the modified appearance hurting the value but still want to enjoy driving occasionally, do a lightweight flywheel and clutch. |
I started off my Porsche car ownership with a lightweight 911 turbo hotrod, having driven an stock 930 after owning a hotrod, I can't believe the hype over the stock 930's, I can't imagine spending $80-120k on a car that is so tame. Sure they look great and are still fun to drive, but I wouldn't trade my car for any other 911 variant in stock form, unless for monetary gains.

Tuned properly, you won't send the engine to an early grave upping the hp like other vehicles.
It's built like a brick ****house..... |
It's pretty common to spend near six figures on a modern performance car which will depreciate rapidly, so why fret over the same money on a 930? Bolt-ons are removable, I don't see this as any obstacle whatsoever to the value of your car.

don't be soft.
modify |
i had a nice 77 911s widebody. I would have loved to strip it down but the interior was very nice.
I ended up selling it for what I paid for it but with a bad motor and bad tranny. I had a spare 3.0o and a factory LSD tranny but I did not want to ruin that car, plus it was a targa and I did not want a targa anymore. if my 930 was stock and I wanted to modify it, I would sell it and buy one that was already in the modified stages. although my 930 is not stock it is an extremely nice car. original paint, great interior. so as far as those things go I would not change but engine and drive train are a different story since it is not original. in fact I am in the process of putting the AC back in just because it is such a nice driving car. I don't consider this car to be a "track" car by no means, it sits way too hi due to 18in wheels, but I consider it a driver as far as a great car to take on trips and just drive. I do look at some of these highly modded 930's and wish I could do that or had that car but I stand to loose too much $$ if I do. I have $40k in this car and 68k miles on it right now so do the math |
Build what you want. There is no guarantee the market on theses cars won't collapse completely anyway.
My personal opinion on the extent of modifications is when you try and make a 25+ year old car out perform a 2014 or newer car. Improve what was restricted by technology limitations or regulations of the period, but don't try to out perform a 2016 anything. At that point you are pissing money away. |
Dude that last engine that you called stock is highly modified with EFI. Looks like the only stock thing in there is the original cooling fan.
|
450 hp in a 2600lb car still spanks most 2016 cars. Power to weight all day long.

...Begin sarcasm...
Great question OP. I'm surprised we haven't discussed this before. ...end sarcasm... |

Reversible bolt-ons, go for it.
I'm driving my kid's college fund, so beyond that no. Oh, and yes, I agree...trying to keep up with 2016 performance is a fool's game. I treat my car as a period piece/curio. :P |
Modify the hell out of it.
|
Just so long as you stop modifying the engine when the chassis twists so much that it pops out the windshield. At that point just back off a pound or two of boost.

A few weeks ago whilst taking a leisurely drive along one of my favorite lake-side roads - and coming upon my favorite twisties - up behind me roars this 2016 dude in a huge-ass truck thing. Don't know what it was, but probably pushing a 6 liter engine putting out huge torque and HP. He probably just wanted to see "what the Porsche could do" or had a stick up his ass and a snoot full of beer. Regardless, I just kind of rolled on the throttle to see if he was serious, and by then well over the speed limit. Still, he hung there like a wet sack between the legs So I rolled on a little more....and a little more...and was forced to show some muscle. Yeah, his rig was doing it's best to keep up and quite respectably so, until it came time to pass the law abiding few in front of me. The event ended, end of story. I guess I won.
So, HP to weight ratio...that's what it's all about regardless of the newer vehicles out there. And my 930 is still stock'ish. Though I did wish at the time that I had even more poop, just because I miss it. |
