A very nice 1989 930 is about to be cut up
I certainly don't have a factory correct car and I am all about modifying them but to me this is a shame

A funny thing about the RWB modification: it's completely reversible.

How's that? Doesn't Nakai-San cut the fenders to fit these kits, or are you being sarcastic?

It's an owner in Dubai. I'm bet this person has one or two perfectly preserved or restored cars already.
At least they are putting the RWB look on cars with Turbo Power!

sure they cut the fenders. I bet they change the bumpers, and even take off the bumper shocks. Fenders are replaceable. Bumpers and bumper shocks are bolt-ons. Nothing here is altering structure in a permanent fashion.

That would be a tough decision, an 89 in that good of shape...even though the RWBs can look pretty awesome. Still, I probably wouldn't do it unless I had some rusted car or fender damage already.
To me, what is worse is people who do this to the best looking part of the car: Just totally kills the looks and me as well. Would rather have no AC and die of heat stroke than do this.

Yeah, I hate the look of bolted on fenders. If he did the same widths in 1-piece sheetmetal keeping the flowing lines of the fender, then I am all for it.
It's not totally hideous to me, but he simply takes the way easy route and charges unreal money for it.

I've got to disagree wiff you chowderheads about bolt on fender flares (even though I don't like many RWB cars) - one of my all time favorite air cooled Porsches is the GT2 Evo in all its bolt on glory! As far as cutting up that 89 goes, I applaud the guy for having the nads to do so - these are just cars, after all. Last edited by Rawknees'Turbo; 02-24-2017 at 09:21 AM.. |

Ridiculous this RWB thing.
My friend went to Japan to see the guy do the job in person. I had another friend go to Seattle to see him work on a 964. The workmanship is atrocious they said. Silicone to seal the fenders and they weren't impressed. That 930 is a beaut. Shame it has to be put to bed that way. |

Most of his victims are 964s and 993s. 930 is badass already, this is sad...

This is like a perfectly beautiful woman going in for a plastic surgery.

Again though - if someone has a vision then they should go for it. It is (IMO) impossible to argue the merits of style or taste.
They made more than a few Porsches so its not like he cuts up one of one cars. I have a good friend who is completely enamored with RWB, for the life of me I cannot understand why. But at the end of the day I dont need to. ![]()

Nakai (RWB) offers smooth fenders, and several builds in Japan and Thailand have them. Some are also not as extremely wide.
Buyers get to choose. US buyers all seem to choose the 934/GT2 look of bolt-on flares, widest or next to widest. Likewise, several US cars have visible fasteners on the rocker panels, and that appears less common on cars built in Japan. To each their own. I think some look great all bolted up like a racecar, others look better smooth. Tippy -- I've got to give Nakai credit for the quality of his fiberglass parts. Really, really good. The kit shipped to us was far better in regards to fit & finish than what you'll buy from most of, if not all of, the the well-known vendors here in the US. Kevlar and stainless mesh reinforcement in the fender flares plus extra material at lip for strength, reinforcement in lids' corners and by latches, crisp leading edges on the decklid louvers, no waves or scratches or pits in surface finish of fiberglass, etc. I bolted on lids right after unpackin them and they needed almost no work. Overall really impressive. The paint shop we contracted said the quality made the $30-something thousand Liberty Walk Aventador package look like junk. Certainly better than the fit and finish on the factory 993 RSRs I've seen, GT2s too -- but Porsche expectedly doesn't give much thought to that because those are racecars and they wholly expect bumpers and flares to be replaced frequently. I'm clearly not a purist, but it even pains me a little to see a pristine 1989 Turbo -- the last and best of that body style -- being cut. Yes, all reversible, true, but you never have factory original paint a 2nd time... (Unless you send it back to the factory for them to restore it.)
