FS and WTB -- replace short 4-speed with correct long 4-speed
Hello everyone,
Posting this to the Turbo forum as this would be on page 3 of the classified by the end of the day. We have a 1978 930 in the shop for restoration. It hasn't run in 30 years -- not a typo -- and not much history on it's past life. Despite very low miles, someone had installed an incorrect "short" 1976-77 930 4-speed in it. Not only is it the wrong transmission for the otherwise very original car, but it also moves the engine approx. 1" too far forward so there's interference with the engine sheetmetal, rear wiper motor, etc. We're wanting to source and install the correct "long" 1978-79 930 4-speed, and sell this short 1976-77 4-speed. If you have a correct long 4-speed available, or need a need a short 4-sp, please contact us. Thanks, |
Chris,
Free up some space in your mailbox. Thanks! |
Done, thanks for the heads-up

That short box is worth about twice a long one.
|
Kris,
I just thought of someone. I'll ping you tomorrow. I think I know a way to help you. I just need to check what year his box is. |

I need that but probably cannot afford it.
got a long 930 4sp with plans to rebuild and shorten the bell housing for my 78 SC/930 conversion project. got a used 930 4sp that turned out to be totally unrebuildable junk. still trying to work with seller on a resolution. if not I will name them and shame them on this forum. good luck, always enjoy seeing your posts Chris. |
Gave Darkstar1 a heads up about this thread.

Mine is still at Rader Motorsports. Been busy so forgot all about it. Email me if interest in a long 930 gearbox. Randyemoore1 AT aol.com
Thanks Randy |
Thanks for the attempted hookup Matt!

You're welcome.

In the spirit of "always be learning", which model is the short 4 spd intended for? Is it a poor man's 915 from a 912E, or is it a legit 930 unit?. Just inquisitive. Thanks, John

Available from 75-77. It's shorter bellhousing to fit the engine compartment of the 911. It houses the same gearing as the longer bel housing.

Chris,
is that short gearbox still available? pls PM me,I am on a quest for a gearbox for my 78 SC/930 conversion project. |
No, turned out that the PO had modified the chassis and shifter for the short box so the current owner opted to reuse it.
|
You mean he kept the engine in the same location as in a 3.3l and moved the transmission beam/shifter location rearward to accommodate the short bell??
|
Engine in stock location.
Transmission crossmember was reversed and curving forwards. Shift coupler and rod had already been modified. |
Thanks for responding. I struggle to understand the rationale but then it is not my car. I guess they broke the gearbox and all they could find was a short bell. Too bad they did not take advantage of it.
