Shifter knob separation

Folks,

My 87 930 has this 3mm gap on the front and back of the shifter knob. Is this normal?

Mine is exactly the same, and I know how it got that way. Like mine, your shift knob was once leather covered, with only the shift pattern showing. The leather wore off and became loose, so someone cut it away just like I did to mine. After awhile I got sick of it and replaced it with a different knob.

Back from the graveyard as not to spam the forum too much.

Can you folks tell me how the factory 930 shift knob is attached to the shifter? I've got a copolymer project in the works.

Is it threaded? If so, would anyone happen to know the thread pitch? Many thanks in advance as usual.

The shift knob is threaded..unsure of the pitch. Mine looks just like the photo above...no more leather.

Thanks so much for the reply and confirmation, that's a step in the right direction. I'm assuming it's of course metric. I would be very grateful if you had some way of determining the specific pitch. Thank you again for your feed back.

If it's like my 87, it uses a crush collar to keep it installed. I used an open end wrench just wide enough to go over the shift lever and tap the bottom of the wrench with a hammer to lift it up.

If it was screwed on, it would have a jamb nut or allen screw to keep it from spinning IIRC.

Many thanks for the insights guys, I sincerely appreciate it. Seems simple enough, and since the shifter itself isn't tapered, I should be able to just have the opening of the new copolymer shift knob machined to match the factory dimensions.

Sorry to nag about it, it's just that the car is in CZ which is six hours ahead of us so it can be difficult to catch the guys in the shop and have them take the measurements directly.

Hold on! My '87 you have to carefully pry off the the top cap and then you unscrew a bolt and the shifter comes off.

We've got some aftermarket junk knob in our car, so if any endeavoring soul would be kind enough to measure the depth and diameter of the opening of a factory '86 and older shift knob, I would be much obliged.

Questions on this thread thread for my 79 930.

I have the crush sleeve.

Question do I need to totally remove the shifter to avoid damaging the shifter mechanism to separate shifter knob from shifter?

Taking a wrench and a hammer and beating on it sounds like it would damage the shifter mechanism if it was left assembled.

I guess I'm asking if I need to totally disassemble the shifter mechanism to safely remove the shifter knob as you would have to use a hammer and wrench to remove it.
