intake air temp sensor
 
Looking for ideas... I want to change the location of the intake air temp. sensor on my EFI'd 3.4. I currently have it mounted on the intercooler close to the outlet/throttle body. Has anyone drilled/tapped their Carrera intake manifold and placed it after the throttle body? I do get a lot of heat soak where I have it installed now. Any ideas appreciated... TIA Philip

Yes, I have drilled and tapped a 3.2 manifold below the throttle in the center section on the passenger side. slight heat soak after sitting. Cools quickly after starting.

I don't think you will see any performance difference between a location below or above the throttle. Both are getting direct airflow, post intercooler.

Hey Jamie, that's what I was looking for... Have any pics of location? I was worried about obstruction/possible turbulence or air flow problems. Philip

Just curious, Why is it heat soaking so bad? Have any pictures you could share? ( I know we have a lot of variations in I/C sizes, locations of exit points, etc) Is the sensor itself heat soaking, or the air coming past it?

Philip, I have mine how you have yours and it's been the best so far. I'd think in the intake would be worse??

I would also think that putting the Intake Air Sensor in the intake mani, would not only lend itself to more heat soak, but also, even though these engines are boosted, I would think that inside of the intake mani, the air would not be straight and free flowing, but turbulent ( I don't know how else to articulate it, not the best choice of words)

I see a lot of heat soak when I have shut my engine down for 5 minutes or so... read here somewhere that the sensor after the throttle body was best. I am pulling my engine this winter to go through some things, and engine temp/intake temp are on the list... Philip

Are you using a closed element or open element temp sensor? Both will heat soak with an engine off and exposed to the radiant heat; however, an open element will return to normal temps far quicker than a closed element sensor will once the engine is running.

Here is where I have mine located.... Just above the TB on the 90 deg elbow. I do not see hardly any heat sink, and the second picture, is of the sensor itself.... Hope this helps.

We locate them in the intercooler's outlet, or the pipe between the intercooler and throttle body (not applicable to you, you have a silicone elbow). Never have an issue with heat soak.

Does your intercooler have cast tanks or sheetmetal? Even if it's a real Garretson-made one, he did both. The actual outlet section is sure to be sheetmetal, you could weld on a 3/8" NPT bung and move it there. The intake manifold is thicker cast aluminum, and probably the most likely to heat soak first.

I am using the same Bosch IAT sensor as Brad, mounted in my Mustang throttle body. I still get some heat soak, but I changed my WUE from engine cycles to 0.1 seconds and increased my WUE time at high intake temperatures. I have 1.5 minutes of WUE at 220*F that tapers down in time at lower temperatures back to 0.0 minutes at 120*F which is where my engine is fully warmed up based on my CLT set up. Note that if you change WUE from engine cycles to 0.1 seconds, the y-axis still reads "engine cycles" instead of "seconds" in the WUE taper dialog box in TS.

This sounds good Dennis, I should be able to leave my sensor where it is but manipulate the fuel settings to accommodate the heat soak. Looks like I'll have a big learning curve once I have the MS3pro is installed... Can't wait. ;-) Philip
