I just finished assembling the case in my rebuild of a '69 911E, and I have a couple quick questions -- any advice would be much appreciated. Here's what I'm wondering:
-- Is there a gasket for the oil thermometer (in addition to the o-ring on the body of the thermometer itself)? Couldn't find one in the gasket kit, and I (stupidly) didn't take a photo of this particular part during disassembly. If there were a gasket on disassembly, it would have made it into the baggie with the thermometer itself, but... you never know. -- In the gasket kit, the only thing that approximates the flattened, black rubber gasket that fits around the body of the oil thermometer is a round, brown rubber gasket of almost the same size. 30 years of pressure could stretch and flatten a piece of rubber -- or not. Any idea if this is the correct gasket? -- In tightening the nuts on the breather cover, two of the studs came loose. My fix was to apply some red loctite and screw them back in. After the loctite cures, I'm going to retorque the nuts. Will this be alright, or is more serious attention advised? -- In general, how much torque should I apply in tightening nuts where no torque is specified in the spec book or workshop manual? for example, on the above-mentioned breather cover nuts? Is firm hand-tightening enough? Also, should I generally use a drop of blue or red loctite, even when it's not explicitly directed? Sorry for sounding like such an obsessive, I'm a 911 rebuild newbie and don't want to make a small mistake that leads to big problems down the road... |

No, there is no other gasket.
Yes, that’s the one. Maybe, do you mean unscrewed? If that’s what happened then your ok. I use a 1/4 " socket and hold it at the socket end and just snug them (probably 6ft/lb). I don't usually use loctite where its not specified, but there are exceptions. Tim |

Tim, thanks for the answers and advice. Regarding the studs, yes, they did just unscrew, and I screwed them back in.
