Feeler/Need Advice: engine price

I have a 1975 911 that I am restoring right now. Currently has a 3.0L Sc motor rebuilt about 10yrs ago. Has had less than 3k miles on it since then. I bought it 4years ago and have been driving it and it runs very well. Couple drops of oil after a nice weekend drive but other than that no issues. I’d like to get an idea of what I should ask for this engine. I am in the process of seriously considering a 964 Engine being sold by another pelican member and need to unload my 3.0L before spending that kind of money. Anyone interested or if you can help put a realistic value on this engine for me I’d appreciate it. I don’t know the details of the engine build. The mechanic who did the work does not have the paperwork as their garage underwent a change in computer systems since then so details are a mystery.

Is it Row motor or US market? Someone's going to ask for a leak down test, compression et. Without those numbers hard to say. Cores are going for $4000 to 6000ish.

Probably best to post on marketplace discussion forum. Realize paperwork is lost but do you know if it was just a top end rebuild or included a bottom end with new bearings etc.? Any idea on how many miles before rebuild?

Disclosing the shop that rebuilt engine may help with sale. Otherwise, a buyer would have to assume it is a core. Think $5k to $6k would be a fair core price with unknowns.

Chris Murad was the mechanic who did the build in the Bay Area. He said he could not remember the details of the build. He says he thought it included JE pistons but could not guarantee since it was a decade ago. The engine should not be viewed as a core that needs rebuilt. Runs very well, just a few drops of oil after driving. The original owner of the car who was getting the work done became ill and could not finish paying for the work. Car ended up remaining in the shop until the owner finally signed off the title and just asked to have it sold and the money owed to the garage could be taken out of the sale price.

I agree with "Mepstein".. $8-$9 is a very fair price for a GOOD engine.

Thanks for the input. If someone is interested in the engine please PM me. I am open to reasonable offers as priced by the above members. I will check in to getting a leak down test. I’m not desperate to sell but if I can get a fair price for the engine this is a good opportunity for me to go for the 3.6 swap I’ve been hoping to do for a while.

Most of the 3.0 engines I have sold have been to 914 guys doing a six conversion. So in addition to the pelican classifieds, put an add in 914world These guys want running engines and $8-9k gets it sold. Offer to strap it to a pallet and let the buyer handle shipping. If they don’t know where to start, have them call freight quote.com

You always want to let the buyer handle shipping on big or expensive items so if it gets lost or damaged, they call the shipping company that they chose, not you.

Thanks. Will work on posting it on that website. I'm assuming these prices do not include the exhaust system?

3.0 value

We used to buy core engines at 3500.-5500. back 2000 -2010, they are getting hard to find now and they are 8000. plus now, If the engine is still in the car I would suggest having a leakdown test done and also a few pulls on a chassis dyno to have with your add, the cost can be recovered in the sale price and buyers can be assured of its condition.

3.6

You might want to locate a 3.6 engine before giving up a good 3.0, 964’s are very tough to find
