Time
Going to pick up the fan and housing from powder coat tomorrow morning so I was going forward today with things that need to be done.
First picture IJBWeld on the 3 oil galley plugs behind the flywheel. Got burned on. This one time, not again. Second picture is flywheel and clutch package in place Third and forth is the G50 in place and ready for the fan/.alternator install Thanks for looking Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539808875.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539809131.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539809205.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539809267.jpg |
Nice use of an extra engine lifting loop on the transmission case!
Also curious if this transmission has the factory clutch fork shaft update (needle bearings in the trans bellhousing, not needles in the fork) or the aftermarket shaft with bronze bushings? Reason I ask is because I was wondering how a shaft with a long service life looked when you removed it. As always, thanks for sharing your progress and your wisdom |
Kevin. The 89 trans had the needle bearings on the ends of the shaft
The shaft was in better shape than the earlier style I replaced with the brass on all contact points and new cross pin Bruce |
Looking great!

Bruce,
Thanks for clarifying. My mistake for thinking this car is an '88, as obviously the title of the thread says 89! Good to hear the shaft was in good shape. The earlier style was a mess and those bearings in the fork would tighten up really with all the contamination. Just curious if the car is an early or late production car, since the supposed change to the better shaft & bearing arrangement was made in April 1989 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1126812207.jpg |
It’s 3/89 production
The challenge was getting the bearing race out of the boss I wound up heating the boss with a map torch enough to have the race release There is no reusing the bearings with needles everywhere Bruce |
Went for a ride this morning
And picked up the fan and housing
That’s my job for the afternoon Brucehttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539882784.jpg |
Well 3/89 is prior to the factory installation. So at some point the post-factory method of drilling the bores was done? Given that the TSB for the revised shaft was issued in December 1989, i'm sure that time has provided a lot of opportunity for many transmissions to be updated via the factory method of drilling the bores for the new bearings and shaft. That said, my former '87 did not have the update done and I hand delivered the trans to a local Porsche dealership around 2002 I believe. A local friend's '87 clutch was serviced a few years after that and I believe he too had the old shaft. He ended up going with the Weltmeister solution. The brand that Pelican now offers is made by Rauch & Spiegel if that matters to anyone searching in the future.
So some of the cars can take a long time to find their way to receiving the update? I took my trans to the dealership since at that time I wasn't aware of the Weltmeister style of replacement bronze bushings & shaft. I discovered the factory TSB in the 1995 Parts & Tech Reference Catalog I got from a different dealership maybe a year prior. So I figured it was the right thing to do. Those needle cup bearings are really kind of funny in terms of how they're assembled. The bearings are really crude in that the needles stay put by nothing more than their grease. You can easily pluck them out of the cup with a pick tool and requires no force at all. Once one comes out, all the rest are ready to fall right out. If you can remove them from the bores without any hassle, they're easy to service with fresh grease if the needles are still smooth/unharmed. I know this because I bought some new bearing cups and decided to do a test with different greases. I plucked the needles out and regreased them with new grease to see how they would perform. I don't have the car anymore but the guy who does is a good friend. Someday we'll see how the aftermarket greases compare to each other. Anyhow, keep up the great work. Wish I was right there with you on my 3.2 rebuild. But that stalled out last winter and hasn't restarted since :( |
There was also a change in the G50 guide tube that kept the TOB from from allowing the trans to close up to the engine. It was so close you couldn’t see the problem.
Bruce |
Yep I encountered that guide tube issue too. Got the TSB for that also!

Motor mount arrived
I got the fan balanced so as not to touch the housing after a little playing with the alternator through bolts
Received the motor console today permitting the rear of the engine to be completed Enjoy the pictures, Bruce http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539995688.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539995688.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1539995688.jpg |
Another great job Bruce. Cheers.
