Rich's '66 911 engine rebuild thread
It's time...I've been putting off rebuilding the numbers matching 2.0 901/05 engine for my '66 for almost 12 years now. It's been sitting on an engine stand all that time getting shuffled around the garage and dusty.
A little history: What I think happened was, the PO over revved the engine (money shift) which took out the #5 exhaust valve which took out the #5 piston. At the same time, the dowel pin on the right cam gear sheared off which I think limited the damage to the #5 cylinder, piston, and head. That's my theory. The engine still ran, albeit, poorly. Since then, I've been running a '70 T 2.2 motor that's run near flawlessly for 40K miles. It was a $2200 CL find back in 2008. That's how I met Al Kosmal. Here's a link to the engine tear-down way back in 2007...Tear-down Here's the damage. The small pieces are piston that just fell out of the case yesterday. ![]() Engine yard sale in my garage. ![]() ![]() My plan is to do a full rebuild using as much of the old stuff as possible. I already have a replacement bare head and piston. I don't know if the cylinder can be saved or not. Right now, the only deviation from stock in the plan is to use some Mod-Solex cams that I've had forever. I'm sure, in the future, I'll look back at this paragraph and laugh. Oh, by the by, this is my first engine rebuild. More to come...
