Camshaft Housing ID - Left or Right

Hi,

Are there markings on the camshaft housing to indicate left and right?

Thanks for any help. I took these off months ago, I am now trying to remember which side is left/right.

Thanks
James

The sides are determined by the plug on the back which can be removes and swapped
Other than the plug, they are identical.

I think what Bruce is implying (correct me if I'm wrong) is that on an MFI car with the drive belt extension on the LHS camshaft, there would be no plug on the LHS. For a carbed car, both sides would be the same.

I could always identify them by the camshaft.

Why are you putting together something so greasy.
Right and left are both the same cam carrier, The plugs go forward on an SC
Lay out the heads, 1,2,3 right to left, the plug will go by #3. The cam carrier won’t fit upside down
If you have the plug by #1 use the other carrier, or, knock out the plug and install it on the other end.

I am disassembling these parts. Far from assembly, I am marking all parts.

Got it.

Left side - thanks.

Thanks everyone.

Ya gotta trust Bruce. Once you have them apart and cleaned up, you will see that by moving the oil line fitting to the other end, and the spray tube locator/plug to where the oil inlet was, and by swapping the press-in plug, you can convert a left for a right.

But no need to do it, and you won't get confused on reassembly - it isn't something like putting the cylinders in right side up where you can make a mistake. Leave the big end plug in place, and you are good.
