Should I go near this case with a 10ft. pole?
This is a 7R mag case I'm very casually considering picking up for a future project.
It's basically a part of a basket case 1975 2.7 that's passed through a few owners for some reason..... I'm told these are case savers, and obviously they've encroached enough on the spigots that the sealing surface is gone. Run away? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1553432681.jpg |
Yes, run away. I don't know that the sealing surface is that big a deal. Its just non-pressurized oil that can leak there. But the time-serts are not installed correctly (I'm assuming they have been expanded already). Getting them out to re-do correctly, without further damage to the case, is near impossible.

I spent $7500 in machining with Walt Watson on a much nicer mag case than the one you are showing me, because I wanted my 914-6 to have a mag case motor. Lots of rehab work goes into a mag case to do it right, not sure that I would ever intentionally start a mag case build ever again!

Too bad nobody is making new mag cases :)
Next project maybe? |

Instead of spending money on twisted, pulled, deformed case, buy a 3.0 and be happy ever after.

But I am starting to have an appreciation for just how much trouble it might be. I am rebuilding a 3.2SS at the moment and all I have to do is clean the case. That's it. These mag cases look like a major PITA! I can't help but think a mag repop might sell in decent numbers to vintage racers and hard-core Rgruppe types. I'm sure you've thought it over more than I have though! |

Well, they recently reduced the price... so I guess they have it
I'm curious what it looks like! Is it made off agnesium??? etc etc |
They most likely have a few laying around in Germany but historically Porsche has been pretty lousy about stocking many of their cases, which is why I started making them. Also the tooling for these cases is either gone or unusable so there is a finite supply of the genuine article.

Making like really making??? Have you got picture??? And a price??
I'm curious :) |
^Which is why I have a link in my signature, please check it out, everything you want to know is on there.

There is a copper gasket that goes over the mating surface. Could JB weld under it to help support the gasket. May leak a little but probably not. Had case savers on my 7r case with similar results to yours. Was fine. Problem with all magnesium cases is that they get brittle with heat cycles and age.

Very nice ! You just have to do a 2.7 case and you will have lost of customers around the world...
As lot's of people like me would be interested in something stronger but for a stock engine |
Please enlighten me .. what’s wrong with the Case Saver installation in these cases ... about to embark on a similar project .. seeking good info
|
Nothing wrong with them. Nice upgrade. These seem to not have been installed correctly.

When putting the heads back on, you aren't going to be able to seal it up very good an most likely oil will leak around that hole. While the inserts themselves look fine... it's how close to the edge the holes are. |
The case savers are not inserted all the way. A copper gasket goes over edges where the holes were drilled. Should be fine but not ideal.
