964 engine rebuild
At 127K miles, and with a pinging sound upon acceleration, the time may be here for a complete rebuild of my 1994 964 (normally aspirated)
What would a full stock rebuild cost, including new Mahle cylinders and pistons? Any suggestions on engine rebuild specialists on the Central Coast in California? Does anybody have a complete parts list available? Any pointers greatly appreciated. Thanks! ![]() |

I would check that you don't have a broken distributor belt. Pinging is not a indication a rebuild is needed.

Especially since the 964 engine has knock sensors.

my 92 964c2 had 280K miles on the clock and still running like new. I did all minor services by myself. I checked and replaced distributor's belt every year. Burning oil and drinking too much gas for the same distance are the signs I am watching for time to rebuilding the top end.

Thank you. Wednesday the knock sensors will be replaced. Wires will be checked and the code checked as well. Other suggestions?
Thx. Quinn |

rebuilding a motor, assuming new pistons and cylinders, is really expensive...
Waynes book 10 years ago suggested $6000-$8000 I believe... Today... double that or more... In the midst of rebuilding a 930 motor, keeping the original P&C as they measured out ok. Easily into it for 5k or so in parts... and my free labor... Paying someone I suspect would easily hit $15k-20k for a quality job... |

I took the 964 to SGS in San Luis Obispo for a check up and they immediately suspected one or two faulty knock sensors, which they replaced...it runs like new!
