My tool is too short.
 
I am in the midst of trying to set a record for longest engine rebuild.

I went to measure the main bearing bores last night and realize if I assemble the case halves with the #8 bearing in place to align the case, I'd have to measure all the bores from the FW end.

I could machine a sleeve to precisely align the case ends during measurement but have never noticed anyone else doing anything similar?

I do the same with old #8 bearings, bore them out but if you don't have one just make a sleeve
