Why shave piston skirts?

Looking over a nice set of 2.2 S P and Cs I was going to use to build up a 2.2 S engine, and I noticed the skirts have been shaved?
Why would a builder do this? Weight savings? Pistons and cylinders look to be in very good shape, and measure in spec.

shorten skirts

I used to use 2.2S Pistons on a 70.4 crank.I believe I trimmed 9 or 7mm off the bottom for clearance purposesFred

pistons

Thanks guys! Coincidentally...that is the plan. To stroke the 2.2 T engine I have and build a 2.4 using the 2.2 P and Cs.
