Re-use engine case bolts
Hi All, I'm in the middle of a tear down of my -71T engine.
Looking for the engine case through bolts and nuts I frequently see used bolts for sale. Does this mean I can re-use my bolts and just get new nuts? I'm building a stock T-engine, no big upgrades. Appreciate all input, Jörgen Forssling Gothenburg SWEDEN |
I believe it’s typical to reuse both the bolts and nuts for the case through bolts as long as they appear to be in good shape.

Yes you can reuse them just be sure to use new o rings and lubricate them and be careful so they don’t rip when tightening. If you don’t have o ring lube then I’ve heard of people using Vaseline to coat the o rings so they won’t get damaged when you are tightening the bolts.
The o rings should come in the engine gasket kit Tony |
The design changed over the years so maybe people update and sell off the old ones? As far as I know they went from coarse thread to fine at some point.

They went to fine thread with the 3.0. If I’m building a mag motor, I’ll try to find a set of fine thread to use as the torque adjustment is more concise and adjusts to the second torque better.
I have several sets of coarse threads available. Bruce |
there are hardware kits available that provide all new nuts, bolts and washers. Dont remember it it includes the through case bolts. See no reason they could not be reused if cleaned up.

Thanks all for your input!

The washers also changed with the use of Aluminum cylinders. The later washers have a beveled edge. With the early flat washers the cylinders will hit the washers and not seat into the case.
