965 gearbox drop -no engine

Hi everyone. I have a 965 on the lift and need to access the clutch. Normally I donīt work on those "newer" 911...
So I looked at everything and was wondering if itīs possible to take the transmission out without the engine. There is way more space in front of the gearbox than with the g bodys.
Here is what I would try:
I would loosen the nuts that holds the engine a little, take out the driveshafts, support the engine take off the gearbox support screws and start lowering the gearboxside till it clears the body and then take it off...
The way I would avoid taking the turbo engine off and safe a ton of time.

Did anybody tried this? Any thoughts about it?

It can and has been done. I have done them on 964, 964 turbo, 993, 993 turbo and 996 turbo.
The hardest part is the the clutch fork and shaft as you are working almost totally blind. my advice from someone who has done this before is if you don't know these cars blindfolded take the engine and tranny out as a unit the way its designed.

If you decide to try it anyway be prepared for a very frustrating job if your not experienced with these models. It comes apart relatively easy but going back together, keeping the fork in position, and getting the shaft and brgs. lined up is a real challenge.

I have also done this with a 964 and 996 turbo. I agree the clutch fork takes lots of patience.

Thanks for your answers! I tried it today and it worked pretty good. The clutch fork took some time but now everything is back together and working fine. Iīm pretty sure this safed me at least a day.

Sure it is possible. Drop them both together and thank me later.

996 turbo? Leave the engine in, easy.

Aircooled, drop both, no coolant to worry about and simple drop.

The fork is no big deal. Tape it up, put a magnet on it through the hole where the slave sits and you are good to go. It sounds far worse than it is....
